I've got 01 Expedition with 5.4
Where is the ECT (coolant temp sensor) in my truck?
I've spent 1 hour looking for it and still can't find it. Maybe I am just blind
That function is likely performed by the CHT (Cylinder Head Temp) sensor.
My server with all my technical data is offline due the current power outage (ice storm) otherwise I'd be happy to look up the exact information for you. Maybe someone else has it handy and can provide it.

I think you are right about the ECT sensor. There might be none in my truck. However, Haynes manual says I am supposed to have one and it is located next to temp sending unit that sends the temperature reading to the cluster.
I've had two of the technicians look for the ECT sensor. They could not find anything either. They were shocked.
I have found one sensor behind the alternator; however, I can't get a good look at it with the alternator in place. All I can basically see is the wire on the right side of the alternator. I wonder if that is the cylinder head temerature sensor
.
Steve,
Would that be true for '99 5.4 as well? I tried to look for it (ECT) when I flushed the coolant and replaced the thermostat, and just gave up because couldn't find it and all the parts guy in the dealership could find is a sender for the gauge.
I thought my application has both? I never knew ECT was inferred from CHT. I thought they were different readings, but maybe not if you assume that coolant flows through the cylinder head and there shouldn't be that great a difference between a sensor immersed in coolant and one in metal (if in fact they are both in the head).
So did I. And what's more interesting is that I called the service departments of 3 Ford dealerships and talked to the technicians, they all said i am supposed to have ECT sensor. That does not make any sense to me. I had to return the ECT sensor that I bought for my car back to the store.
I'm almost certain that I have seen what appears to be a ECT behind the alternator abou where the thermostat sits. But then again, I have a different motor than yours.
