Unhappy DTC P0118 keeps coming back, help?

My 1997 E-150 5.4L V-8 has come up with a P0118 DTC that I cannot eliminate. This 5.4L does not have an engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) but it has an engine coolant temperature SENDER that provides info to the temperature gauge on the dashboard. The engine and the PCM get their coolant temperature info from the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor (CHT sensor). And the PCM will make its engine fueling calibrations based on this info.
My van is a taxi-van, and ever since the P0118 DTC has been on, its MPG yield has lowered thus creating a tremendous hole in my pocket. I've replaced the ECT Sender and the CHT Sensor both twice to no avail. I've searched for a short on the wire harness that connects to the PCM to no avail also.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to deal with this problem? Truth is that I have not taken the matter to the dealership, but I've has the van since new and I've always been able to fix all its problems by acting on the DTCs that I get via an Actron OBD-II Code Reader.
Help, please.....

Whats real important with OBD11 is to get hold of the manual and work it through don't just go replacing parts anybody can do that...It will tell you what to measure where.. Get a good digital meter and start checking wires to the computer..

Goodluck

rmarrero,

I'm no expert, not even close. But this is how I would approach the problem.

FIRST, eliminate the CHT sensor as the cause of the problem. I know you replaced it. But you could have bought a defective one. The only way to be 100% sure is to swap it out with one that you KNOW works ie swap with one fron another '97 5.4l that is running well. (ask friends/co-workers)

If the sensor itself is not the problem, its time to think about things that would actually cause cyl head temp to go too high.

Which sparkplugs are you using? I'd use properly gapped Motocraft plugs reccomended in your owners manual.

Carbon build up can cause "hotspots" . I haven't used it, but I've heard "SEAFOAM" is a good product for removing carbon from your engine. Try these and let me know how it goes.

Good Luck,

Bill

is the truck getting hot enough?
the t/stat may not be operating properly.
the computer will kick that code if the engine doesn't get hot enough, quick enough. use only ford parts to be sure you are getting good parts.
good luck
