Electric Wiper Conversion on my 51

I installed an electric wiper conversion today that I bought online from Vintique, Inc (part number 1C-17508-HD12 For 1951-52 Ford Pickup). Well, let me be honest, I'm not quite finished. I also bought and installed a new passenger side wiper shaft assembly from Sacremento Vintage Ford, at the same time, so I could have two wipers.......it's a big deal to have both, I only had one for the last 6 months!
I was a bit dissapointed in the "bolt on" aspects of both parts. The electric wiper motor kit uses the original vaccuum motor mount. You drill out the spot welds on the original bracket and bolt the new motor onto the bracket with supplied screws, so far so good. All went well until the " install the new two speed switch" , assuming it goes into the original vac switch location, and the wiring harness supplied is 12 inches short!
The new shaft assembly has no means of connecting the pivot arm to the existing linkage. So I drilled and fabricated my own connection with a new stud and bushing for the pivot arm.
None of this was difficult, just unexpected. I guess it's a case of buyer beware!

Anyway, I'll put up some pictures in the nex day or so and show in more detail what was bugging me about the install.
Thanks for letting me rant a bit.

Unfortunately many of us have been down similar roads . It sounds like the electric wiper replacement was set up to replace the vacuum motor for a single wiper setup rather than for the double wiper electric setup that was available from ford starting in I think either 51 or 52. The reason that I ask is that I have one of those original 2 wiper 6v electric setups with a bad 6v motor.

Sounds familiar all right...still not too bad but why couldn't they be honest and say up front that some fabrication is required? As far as the wiring harness, that's inexcusable, they could have made any length, why not the correct length?!

I feel for you.

My truck is a single wiper only, but it has a spot to add the passenger side wiper post. I figured no problem, kits are readily available and there are tons of these truck around. I thought it would be simple to find the factory linkage and fab my own motor. Not so. It turns out that the 48-50 wiper set up is quite a bit different from the 51-52 set up due to the differences in the dash and pair of large dashs upport brackets on the earlier cabs....ugh.

Basic point to this is.....I don't have any wipers yet

Glad you were able to make it all work together

Bobby, pre 1977 (done by a po) someone had cut into those supports on Willard to install the early 6v wiper setup. I modified it some more to install my heat/AC in dash unit and fabbed up a 12v setup by modifying the 6v electric setup. I am still not totally satisfied with it however.

49,
I thought I had the correct passenger side linkage that I took out of a parts truck. But when I tried it in the truck it rubs a bit on the dash braces and I noticed that it had been cut and welded(the original openings in the 2 dash braces are pretty small) I can take what I have and probably fabricate something but I would sure like to find the factory passenger linkage to start with.

I think I will mount whatever motor I decide on either on the passenger side or in the middle between those two braces (I plan on putting my radio up overhead)

Do you have pics of your set up?
Bobby

Doug, I put the same Vintique unit in my '51. I was ok with the drilling out the rivets and such, but my switch wires were almost too short too. The switch needed about 1 1/2 more inches of wire to reach the stock mount hole, but I found the way the factory had routed the wires out of the motor they exited out the right side, so after taking some of the motor bracketry loose I put the wires out the other side and just by luck I barely had enough to reach the hole. Won't help you with 12 inches too short, but just to say I feel for you with the "nothing is a perfect bolt in".

After seeing this thread, I think that the Cherokee setup that Cowman used is gonna be about as easy. I'm mounting the motor now.

Mine was originally a two wiper vaccuum set up. The previous owner got mad at the vaccuum system in a downpour and ripped the passenger side wiper off and managed to break the end off of the wiper shaft at the same time.
As for the electric setup that you have, the one I bought only replaces the vaccuum system. Sorry no help there.

Any updates?

Has anyone else used a Vintique Inc. wiper motor (51-52 f1), the Vintique wiper motor is about $ 50.00 cheaper now then the New Port Engineering one which I have used (not that impressed) but it is made state side whereas the Vintique looks like it might be an import. Anyone have any new or updated experience or observations with the Vintique?

Thanks, Ray.

If you haven't bought a unit yet may I suggest a Dennis Carpenter #7c-17508 for 48-52 F1, it's a bolt -in 2 speed unit, I don't remember drilling anything and they work great, Garry

I know I'm posting to an old thread, but does anyone have the installation instructions for the Vintique 1C-17508-HD12 kit. I bought someone's unused kit off of ebay, but it was missing the instructions.

thanks

Jeff

Instructions for vintique kit

I managed to get the instructions for the Vintique electric wiper conversion. (see attached)

Apparently the support bracket mounts to the firewall where the radio was supported/mounted. Does anyone have a picture showing the radio mounting or where the kit's bracket attaches? My truck never had a radio so I don't know if a mounting hole had even been drilled.
