I have a 10.5 diesel LS carrier out of my 02 SD. I forgot how much beefier the 10.5 was compared to the 10.25 I had dealt with in the past. When my truck was wrecked I had to replace the rear, and installed an Eaton LS. Not sure if it was worth it or the right idea, the 10.5 is way beefy, especially with it's 3 pinion design and almost closed 2 piece case. Usually swapping the Ford for Ford unit's you get pretty lucky and they are machined exactly the same. Changing manufacturers usually means new shims.
I won't be using the Original Ford 10.5 LS again, even if the Eaton doesn't hold up, so let me know if you are interested.
you dont have to touch the pinion, all you do is pop the axles out, pull the 4 carrier bolts and drop the old carriere out, swap your ring gear and abs ring onto the 10.5 carrier and install it, if you buy a new one then you'll have to put side bearings on it. but get a used deal and just drop it in

please tell me that you guys are at least double checkin BL to make sure you are within spec! the wear pattern is vital on the daily drive trucks esp for those of us who tow!
There are always tradeoff's with anything. Sideways stability will be an issue with a limited slip or locker b/c it will cause both wheels to spin. So on offcamer stuff, or marginally slick stuff like ice (your screwed anyway imo), the vehicle will go sideways. I've heard that is why cop cars don't have LS to improve overall stability.
If you have a (positive traction device) in the front, then the whole truck can go sideways, not just the rear.
