I'VE had this same issue on my 2000 EX PSD. It has happened 3 times in 5 years IM always at a stoplight. And the EX just dies. It sounds like its happening with both the diesel and the V10. Mine has only died in the summer. So I thought living in the Phoenix area With our frickin heat was the cause. Then I caught this thread. And now its got me wondering. My 05 V10 EX has not had this problem (yet) but I have only had it a few months , hope someones got some good ideas

Okay, I'm going to take a shot at this even though 1) I'm not only a newbie to this forum but to Excursion V-10s and 2) most importantly I'm not a mechanic, but this type of problem happened to me once with another vehicle--a water-cooled VW Vanagon.

Yeah, I know. You're probably all going to scroll down to the next poster, but this might be worth something.

I see that several of you live in dry-climate areas. Not Byos, though, in FL, but maybe the humidity was low that day.

What was happening with the VW was exactly what Byos is describing. We would be driving along and for no reason at all the engine would simply shut off. This happened several times and the dealer was never able to duplicate the situation, much less solve the problem.

I started keeping notes when each time it happened. Engine temp, oil temp, all the things that you would normally think of. Then one day while I was looking at my notes it registered with me that not once did the engine die when it was raining. I checked back to my log and saw that every time it happened we were in a desert-like area.

I looked at all the places where static electricity could develop and found that the main air intake (plastic) was right next to a computer module controlling the fuel injection. Knowing that static discharge can be a real problem in flying, I mentioned this to the service manager at the dealer and he looked at me as though he just might consider calling the guys in white uniforms with the nets.

Convinced that I might be on to something. I put a large metal hose-clamp around the air intake, attached a woven-wire cable to it and dropped it straight down to the ground.

The engine never died again. We sold the van with the cable attached. VW moved the computer relay on subsequent models after I wrote a detailed report and sent it to their U.S. office.

I know nothing--yet--about our Excursion, but after reading this thread and the reports about unexplained dying motors I'm going to investigate the air intake and nearby wiring.

Well, I cleaned my K&N type filter - it was dirty and needed cleaning. I sparingly oiled it, per the directions.

I also pulled out the MAF - note that it is screwed in place by two "security" torx screws (the one's with the nipple in the middle of the star). The MAF has 4 resisters in it, and one of them was kinda brownish-greyish in color. So I used an fine paint brush and rubbing alcohol to clean all 4 of them very gently. Then blew them dry with a some canned air. And put it all back together...

Driving last night and today, I'm seeing almost a 10% increase in MPG! Let's see if this holds for another week or two.

Hope this helps,
Randy R...

to todd since your at idle when your psd dies for you I'd look at the cps these things are notorious for going bad and idle is a key when slowing down coming to a light etc
the sensor can not detect rpm and the computer goes into self defence mode and shuts off, sucks when towing 12k# of toy hauler through a red light no power brakes no steering, changing cps is an easy fix from underneath behind the harmonic balancer
one bolt and an electrical disconect pop out and replace no sweat good luck
