Front Wheel Bearing
My X is a 2001 V-10 2WD, 109,000 miles.
A couple of weeks ago I did the front brakes. Repacked the bearings and adjusted it according to the manual. 18ft lbs, spin, back off 1/2 turn, re-torque to 18in lbs, continue reassembling.
After driving for a week or two, I began to feel something moving around in the front when hitting bumps or rough pavement, jacked it up and sure enough there was play in the bearings. I readjusted the bearings according to the manual, but there was still play. Kept on torquing down until free-play quit. But, then it felt like it was way to tight, the nut was probably another eighth-turn further than when set at the 18in lbs.
So, my question, is this a symptom of worn out bearings? Should I have replaced them while I was in there doing the work?
Thanks,
Archie...
For most mechanics it's a feel thing. I take the nuts until there is no play but not too tight. Like I said, after 15 years you just feel it, just barely snug, no play but rotor still spins freely. You shouldn't have any play when done. Did you repack the bearings and hopefully put new seals in? If the bearings were bad, you would see it on inspection. Scoring, discoloration, metal flakes, etc. The 109,000 miles doesn't bother me a bit if the bearings look good.
