how to build a cheap stroker

hey everyone, i am new to the forums and would like to get everones input on how to build a cheap 501 to 513 stroker. my uncle and i have a mud truck and we are wanting to build a cheap stroker for this year. i have heard that you can build a 501 to 513 out of cheaper parts. If anyone can help me build this engine that would be great. thank you

I assume you are starting with a 460. I ask this as I wish to follow this thread.

Welcome to the FTE family Steven. Please try to use FTE sponsors for your stroker kit. As for finding stock pick a part stuff to stroke it. Someone else will have to answer that as I think 460 is as big as ya can go stock. But I really don't know.

how cheap is cheap? you can piece together a 545 rotating assembly for about 1400, you could do a 501 for about 900 if you reuse the stock rods... but you arent going to get much cheaper than that... then whatever you buy you have to get balanced

You can get your stock crank offset ground down to Chevy sized rod journals and have about 4.1 stroke. Then you'd have to buy new rods.

Easiest and cheapest thing to probably do would be to just buy a stroker kit from someone.

Be cautious...."CHEAP" you will get what you pay for. IMO, why go to the time and effort of rebuilding an engine with cheap parts. Maybe for a daily driver or something, but for a Mud Truck, your going to be reaching the high RPM range and you don't want to have cheap parts. The other thing is, no matter what, your going to have over 1K into a budget stroker kit by the time it's all balanced out. But, I don't know your definition of CHEAP either.

the words cheap and stroker don't really coincide all that well.the cheapest good way i could think of is if you find someone who's upgrading their 514/521 to a 545/557.you may be able to get the used rotating assembly which would be already balanced.thats if you're luckier than i am.i had to buy new stuff.if it was me i'd get a scat 4.3 (521) kit with upgraded rod bolts to the 2000's and spray the heck out of it.

you'll have lots of fun till the block breaks.just kidding.of course i've broke a couple.....

for my 545 im going scat 9000 series 4.5" stroke crank ($360 from sdpc2000.com), scat 6.7" h-beam rods with upgraded rod bolts($454 from cnc-motorsports.com), and probe forged- probably flat tops but may go a dish ($527 from cnc-motorsports.com), and total seal tnt gapless rings($321 from cnc-motorsports.com), then bearings and machine work and balancing on top of that and youve got a heck of a strong stroker assembly. i say pick quality parts and then search for the best price on those parts. everything i listed is pretty much top of the line parts except the crank, and parts cost before bearings and shipping is $1652, so figure another 850 or so for bearings and balancing and machine work and misc parts and youre in around 2500 for a heck of a shortblock, or you could go cheap and get a 4.3" stroke crank for $360, reuse the stock rods, and get je pistons for $677 and have just over a grand into parts, but it wouldnt be nearly as strong as spending 600 dollars more on the 545 with all good parts

thanks alot JBranley500, I looked into that stroker kit and it sounds like just what i need, I have one more question, we run a pair of DOVE heads on this engine now, will they still work or not. I had heard that they would not flow very good and would choke the engine down.

D0VE's are okay stock. A good porter can open them up to where they flow quite well. I wouldn't run them stock on a big stroker.
