A few other small things too, but my question is about the cam I want Lunati Voodoo Cam and Lifter Kits: LUN-61601LK - summitracing.com
Can this cam be used without changing anything in the heads? (D3VE) I want to leave the heads as they are immaculate inside and out. I had them off when I did the head gaskets and dont want to have to disassemble them just to make them work with a cam swap.
I dont understand the whole "buy a timing chain set for a '70 460 and make more power" theory either can someone explain this to me? I'm not familiar at all with timing chain and cam degreing.
Is it that simple?
The timing chain deal is very simple. After 70 or 71 emissions regulations made the timing become 3* retard. By adding a 70 429 timing chain you can set your timing straight up. The advance in timing makes more power. Very crude explanation from one layman to another.
I used the Comp Cams CCA-34-231-4 extreme 4x4 cam in my 460 with almost the same specs as you and I love it! The D3 heads are very good for street engines from what I have learned.
Of course more power is better and sounds like a nice trick. Recommend a particular set? Anything different I need to know to install the timing set because of the year difference?
I did change my springs for CCA-926-16 and also added 744-16 retainers and 611-16 locks on top of my stainless valves.
The timing chain will slide on just like your current one. No tricks just set it straight up. That is probably the easiest HP you will ever find on a 460 engine.
You can change springs with the heads installed. All you need is a cheby style valve spring compressor that looks like a 12" lever with a hole for a rocker arm nut and a notch to pull the keepers out. Do not use the clamp style one since it will only work for single valve springs. And don't forget you will need one thing to keep the valves in place with the springs out. Air pressure via a compresion guage hose with the valve removed. Order the springs with the cam to ensure you don't have any problems. As a reminder you may need to remove the inner valve springs while breaking the cam in. After the cam is broken in you will need the above tools to install the inner valve springs.
So whats a good cam for low to mid range power that matches my stealth intake and I dont have to change springs? The extreme 4x4 cam? I dont do any off roading in this 2wd truck and am looking for some good torque for towing and a slightly choppy idle. what about an rv cam? I really had my sights set on that Lunati voodoo cam wich is recomended for towing and and streat applications. Oh well. I'm not changing springs. I dont know how and wouldnt know which ones to buy and what combos would work good etc. etc. I'm trying to make this an easy cam swap for a little bit of power.
The extreme cam I bought with the springs retainers and locks were about $310 including shipping and a 8oz bottle of assembly lube from Summit. With my build desktop dyno says my max torque is at 2000rpms. It doesnt get much better than that for towing.
Also, Its going to be hard to get a choppy idle real performance cam under .500 lift
Nobody has any suggestions? I'm going with my original decision. I looked at the lunati (holley) website, and it says there the cam I want can be used with stock springs.
Can you not read, man? There are plenty of suggestions, including some to go with a particular Comp cam that I have also used. In addition, there are several suggestions that you should change your springs.
You can lead a man to logic, but you can't make him think.
i guess i was looking for all the answers at once. I have an edelbrock cam picked out too and it says use edelbrocks springs or or leave the oem stock springs. what would be involved in changing them if i had to
