Talking Windsor Stroker - 393 or 427

I have a 351 Windsor block that I just finished tearing down a few weeks ago and I have yet to decide what I want to do with it.I have thought about buying a 1992-1994 F-150 4x4 and putting the 351 in it with an EFI Setup from a big Bronco, but I can't decide on that either. What I REALLY want is a 1968 F-100 Ranger. That would be the bomb .

Anyway, either way,I want to stroke this 351,but what to?Kits are available from a reputible company on eBay for $1,000-$1,500 for either the 393 or the 427 Windsor Stroker.I'm leaning towards the 427 because it puts out some hellacious torque numbers and seems to be a fairly dependable engine if built correctly.

If I go with the old F-100,I will go with a carburetor. But,if I go with the newer F-150,it will be EFI.Does anyone here have either Windsor Stroker engine? How do you like it?

I believe that I am fairly knowledgeable in the engine-building process and I would love to tackle one of these just for fun .This block is already bored at .040,but I think that the company that I order the kit from can get me a set of pistons for that bore size. Most of them that I've seen are .030,but we'll see.

This build-up should be quite interesting if I tackle it at this moment in time.I am in the process of building a budget 2.5L Stroker for my 1992 Ranger, but I will need something to do after that is done.

Any insight is appreciated.

Some of the stuff on ebay isn't the best bang for the buck, from what I have read anyways. I would invest in a brand name kit. I hear the cranks sold for low bucks are not very reliable. But your off to a good start by asking questions. I haven't built one I have only read other post like yours.

I have buddies that have built both of these strokers in the past and they've gone with a company called The Mustang Depot on eBay.I looked them up and they look like they have one of the best kits around.None of my friends have had any trouble with their's,and they keep their foot in it all of the time.

The Mustang Depot's Windsor 393 Long-Rod Stroker Kit
The Mustang Depot's Windsor 427 Stroker Kit

I have talked with one guy who has built tons of both engines. He said that the 393 is where it's at,but the drawback is that most kits only come with .060 pistons.I think that TMD's kit comes with .030 pistons.Anyway,he said that they had an excellent power range, but the 427 was better for torque and towing. That's exactly what I want.He said that if they're done right, either of those 2 engines are just as or even more reliable than factory built engines.

So,it sounds as if these engines are excellent performers.I would built a 347 Stroker, but hey, since I've got the Windsor block, why build one of those !?I've also bought another 351 Windsor block from a guy that came out of a 1984 F-150.It's all stock.I might just build a 427 with the block I have now and a 393 with the one that I'm getting from him.

This is going to be soooo much fun .

Also, another plus of going with TMD's Kits -

I have done my research and other kits that I have found have the piston pin bore intersecting the oil ring groove in the piston, thus resulting in oil consumption at higher RPM's.This is due to the longer stroke and the piston having to be physically shorter.

The Probe pistons that TMD offers don't have this problem. The pin bore is where it should be...Not intersecting the oil ring groove on the piston.

You can see what I'm talking about here.Scroll down to the pic of the two pistons.I believe that's the Probe piston on the left and a standard 427 Stroker Piston on the right.See the difference?

So are you again using a scat crank, stock 351 rods and 302 stocktype pistons for a 393? If you exclude balancing which both cranks/rotating assemblies require you would save some money if you look around for the pistons. Just a thought, later

Whichever Stroker I choose,I'm going to buy a kit.TMD said that they would balance it for an additional $100,which is another thing that I'm going to invest in.I'd rather just buy the kit and bolt it in instead of hunting for parts here and there.

Keep in mind most recommend that you use YOUR flexplate/flywheel and damper when your rotating assembly is balanced. Something to think about, later

Will this kit fit any 351W, i.e. a 1991 out of a F250 4x4??? Just wondering, thanks....
