Well, as far as rarely using it, a capable scan tool is one of the absolute BEST investments you can. You will be using it a lot, not because something is always 'wrong' but because it is your way to communicate with the vehicle, and things can and will go wrong, then you'll be ready.
Also gives you plenty of insight into potential problems, etc.
I totally understand not wanting to drop the coin on one though.
The Auto Enginuity bundle from ITP is less than 400, and is great if you have a laptop/palm to run it on.
I don't know of any place that rents a capable code scanner you could use. Remember our trucks are NOT strictly OBD-II compliant, if they were the one you are using would work fine.
Got some good news-my same buddy that was helping me over the phone last night that was a tech for a ford shop has one of the super cool guy code readers and is going to come to my shop with it tomorrow. Hopefully it sheds some light on the problem!
And it was something totally stupid just like I was hoping it would be. When I was first checking fuses before I found the one that was blow I apparently pulled one of the block fuses and put it in a blank location...unfortunately that fuse was for something in the FI system. Yes I am retarded, but huge thanks to everyone here for all the help! Now I am not freaking out as I am leaving town wed!
