My '56 long bed has an unusual clutch problem. When cold, the clutch engages smoothly, forward or reverse, at any rpm. When hot, engagement is fine in forward gear, put in reverse- yeow! really bad chatter. This only happens warmed up in reverse. Truck has a 292, stock 3 speed (in great shape) and stock axle. Motor mounts, u-joints etc are fine. Could excess backlash in the ring & pinion do this? Or what?
Hi Steve, I would take a close look at your reverse gear idler shaft for excessive thrust clearance. Also, as your trans oil warms up, it will thin out some. That can make a difference also. So check it out and let me know.
