Tranny grind

My 95 F250 4x4 5sp with 5.8L shifts fine in all forward gears. In reverse 7 out of 10 times it will seem like it engages but when I go to let out on the clutch it jumps out of gear and starts to grind, (Probably because my hand is on the stick). It doesn't matter whether it's 0*F ot 100*F if I don't shift the stick in and out of reverse 3 or 4 times before I let out on the clutch, it will pop out. You think I need to start at the bushings on the clutch pedal or on the shifter linkage? Or could it be something else?

Sounds more like transmission issues. I'm guessing bent fork? Worn bushings on the fork(do they put those plastic bushings on these like a T5?).

Something is keeping it from going into gear fully.

I just found this link online for the ZF5 trans, which is what I assume I have. It looks like some good reading. Maybe this should be pinned someplace if it isn't already.

Until you get it fixed, I found I can usually get it to stay in gear 9 times out of 10 by double clutching.

No I didn't say I was double pumping. I push the clutch in once, I have to move the stick in and out 3 or 4 times before it will fully seat and even then it may jump back out. Almost like it only engages halfway.

I checked the bushings and I don't have anything worn. I'm not low on fluid and I had to replace the front brake lines when they blew this winter. I went through a lot of brake fluid getting the air out of the system and it's not leaking. Master cylinder is in good shape, at least no visible leaking to the outside. The clutch is engaging off the fllor about 1.5 to 2 inches from the floor. I believe that's normal. The truck has 132K on it now and there is some clunking going on when shifting. Could be ujoints, axles, or the input output shafts of the trans or it could be just wore out. I bought the truck with 128k on it 2 years ago and have only put about 5k on it so who knows how the previous owner(s) treated it. It is a plow truck after all.

I had this happen when I first swapped the ZF in my truck. I took the transmission apart and found that the reverse gear had worn into the thrust surface on the mainshaft, which allowed the reverse gear to move away from the slider, keeping it from fully engaging and allowing it to pop out of gear when the clutch was engaged. I had to replace the reverse gear and the mainshaft, plus I replaced all the bearings, synchros, and seals at the same time while it was apart. I also replaced the shift forks just in case, but I'm not sure that they were worn out. Total cost for parts was right around $1000.
