Quiet?

Most people cut all cats, I have one with the manifolds and stock y-pipe no muffler and its not that loud. It sounds more like a rattling sound. How much louder do headers make it? Should I get long tubes or shorties? If long tubes where can I find a bolt up exhaust y-pipe. By the way I have a 94 f-250 with a 351. Im scared if I cut the last cat it will elimintate my backpressure and burn the o2 sensor.

Shorties will generally use the stock Y pipe. A modified Y pipe can be made by any competant exhaust shop so you can use long tube headers. Most stock Y pipes suck anyway, too many kinks and dents for clearance.

Either header design will generally make the exhaust note a little louder, but having cats installed will keep things pretty quiet. Get a high flow cat if needed, and be environmentaly responsible, whether local laws force you to or not.

I dont know where you got the idea of backpressure hurting O2 sensors, but backpressure is something you do not want. Backpressure means restriction. You cant possibly burn the sensor since its meant to be in the exhaust stream anyway.

Oh Ive heard backpressure is needed for the 02 sensors and to keep valves from burning. So other than torque backpressure will not hurt anything by eliminating it by cutting the cats.

The only time backpressure hurts anything is when you have a lot of it. It hurts power. You will not hurt torque by decreasing backpressure.

The only thing O2s need is a constant exhaust stream to measure from. Its possible to burn a valve because the engine can run extremely lean by opening up the exhaust system. But not very likely at all. I would not worry about it. Reset the PCM and that problem should be solved. Its a good idea to reset it after any mod anyway.
