Y-Pipe

For the past few months I have been slowly making my decision on how I am going to get a set of long tube headers on my truck. I have decided on the Flowtech long tubes and what I need to do now is come up with a y-pipe setup.

My question is, does anyone have any idea how much an exhaust shop would charge to make me a y-pipe? I plan on using headers with a 2.5" collector, a cat, and keeping my current 3" pipe from the cat back to the stock exit location.

depends on what they need to do o go around.. longtubes arent really ment to have a y pipe on them, if you wan to keep a Y just get shortys..

but if your et on LT's, your lookin at roughly 70-100 to have them fab it up, depends on how much there willing to give you.

If you live in MA lemme know, i can get u a discont at an exhaust shop around here.

See my pics, I built this myself to replace a compression bent setup a muffler shop had done for me years earlier that had rusted out. This uses all mendrel bent tubing and flows much better than the compression bent tubing, which was crimped down to less than 2" in some locations. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure the muffler shop charged me 3-4hrs for their work.

I set mine up a little diferent from Conanski. Here are some pics of mine, didnt take too long.
Here is the Lone tubes collectors and the start of the Y

Here is the 02 it sits on top of the flange, that is the factory spot on my truck, it is different on other models. That flange is where my stock cat hooks up 2 for inspection.

Here is the flange 2 the muffler, I used a dual in dual out Flowmaster 40.

And then I used 2 90* and put the 3.5" tips at a 45* angle infront of rear tire. Just another way to go.

Here is how it sounds if ya like to know.

you have more of a H pipe than a y pipe.. especially with a dual in dual out muffler

Plenty of people, including Conanski, set up longtubes to work with a y-pipe and single exhaust, and I am set on longtubes because I have never owned a set of shorties and am not sold on them providing substantial power gains.

To Conanski and 95F350XL, thanks for the pictures, both of your setups look good to me and I will probably attempt something like Conanski's. I really like the dual tips exiting in front of the rear wheels, but I bought a high-flow cat about 8 months ago when my old one went to hell and do not want to just get rid of it after I already spent the money on it! Also, I would prefer to leave the cat on my truck even though I do not have emissions inspections because of its location and the fact that you could see it was missing without even getting under the truck.

Conanski, when you fabricated your current y-pipe, were you able to purchase all of the parts off the shelf and then weld it toghether, or did you have to have anything bent? I am asking because I am a pretty decent welder and if I could get everything I need off the shelf, I would probably be able to avoid going to an exhaust shop.

All parts except the tailpipe were purchased over the counter, and the tailpipe is a stock Ford Powerstroke piece I picked up at an automotive flea market. I used a pair of 2-1/2 header adapters, 2 mendrel bent J bends, a Magnalow 2 into 1, Magnaflow 3" cat, and Flowmaster 3" muffler. The J bends were cut on a chop saw and welded by your's truely with a Lincoln wire feed welder.

Thanks again for the help. I think I am going to piece a system toghether myself and avoid having to go to a shop. The only problem is that I have one of those cats that uses the same flange 95F350XL is using before his muffler. What I think I am going to do is get the pipe and mandrel bent j-bends I am going to need and route them back to the cat in a fashion similar to how 95F350XL. At the cat I am thinking that I will use the same style flange to run my two pipes from my headers into the cat.

Looking at what I have for room underneath the truck, it looks like I can easily route the pipes between the crossmember and frame (instead of the goofy looking stock routing underneath it) and if I am lucky, I will not even have to move the cat or change anything behind the cat.

On ebay they do sell a flange like mine that converts it into a single 3" peice. I did mine that way caus I still need the stock cat for inspection time. Just had 2 undercover cops lookin my exhaust over the other day and loved it. They didnt even notice that I didnt have the cat on lol. Here how my "emissions exhaust" is. Getto looking but it passed.

Nex: Yea i know its more of a H pipe, but to me H pipe is in the center of a car like my stang, and I think if I say H pipe on my truck people be like say what lol.

Conaski...Great pics of your y-pipe. Onequestion though: I notice the left pipe has a curve in it? Was that to clear the trans linkage?

Also as an FYI.....You can get 3" mandrel bend tailpipe from Auto Zone for $29.99. It's a Maremont part M30001. Just ask for SKU# 577061 at the counter

Yes, the tranny shift linkage moves down from it's position in the picture(park) so there needs to be clearance to go all the way to low gear.

Hey Paul,

You had posted the links where you bought your mandrel pipe online, I have no shop local.

Can you post that back up? I searched a bit, but you post alot, there are lots of thread to look through for the links....

Or if it's just Summit or Jeggs, then that's cool. Looking for the best bargain.

Thanks.
