Try the 47 and earlier forum on FTE. I've got to believe that somebody on there has a beater tailgate they want to unload.
I think that's the best idea yet in this thread. You can also search the member directory (advanced search) for people with trucks from those years and PM them. If they don't have an original tailgate to part with, they may know someone who does. For that matter, just go to the galleries and filter by year. You can see the trucks that have tailgates and contact those guys (or gals as the case may be).
I'm a bit late finding this thread, and a bloody long way away, but......
A guy over here in Australia by the name of Gerald Clancy stamps out Ford scripts on new tailgate skins or into chunks of sheet.
He trades as "Gnome Rods", not sure if he is on line.
Sitting next to me as I type is piece of body sheet about 8 x 15 with the Ford script in it which I got from him at a swap a year back........$20 Australian, or about US$15......not sure what that is in Canadian pesos
Sounds like you have what you want, but if anyone else needs one....yell, and I will track him down
On a similar note, I have previously cut "ford", "Powered by Ford" or "V8" out of rocker covers, straightened them out and cut them into panels......with help from better beaters than me. Over here Windsors, Clevelands and 4 cylinders (pinto?) are all good donors
That's a GREAT idea......I should stop work on my F-1, pull my panel lift door apart, cut my ford script into a panel, sand blast it. then re-powder coat that panel.......I'm outa here....see you in a week.
I will chase up contact details for Gerald and see if I can get some for you guys.
With freight etc it would be best if we do a "group purchase" and then I ship them to a single distribution point
I will get back to you if/when I tie down a source and a price
halfdone:
Does he do them in Mercury?
That would be cool for some of the Mercury restortaions also as it is impossible to find a good Mercury tailgate.
Don
It has some very cool metalworking tips and tricks. I've seen your handywork with wooden bucks and your ingenuity in metal work. I think you're the man to do it.
Just a thought
Bobby
Guys, seems to me you're over looking a pretty easy solution. Find a shop with a flo-jet. Get them a decent pic of the script and have it cut out of what ever gauge metal you want. Weld the script to the tail gate and spend some time smoothing/metal finishing. With this group of guys, finding a shop to blast some of these out should be simple. Do a group buy to try to get the cost of each piece lower.
Heck, I'd bet AX knows of a shop with a flo-jet..... all the fabbing/racing going on around his shop? AX? Got a line on a shop with one?
although this one is kind of rough, it's a heater from a '48-52 truck. This is currently on uPay for $10 and would be cheaper than shipping a tailgate.
Another source is vendors that sell pickup beds. I have seen the Ford script stamped into the small panel extensions at the front of the bed. They aren't too expensive and readily available.
Because of licensing agreements the guys who build authorized Ford reproduction parts will not sell just a stamped piece of metal with the Ford logo. I was told this when I asked Northern Classic Trucks to sell me a rear beam for a Ford flat bed. I think they sold individual parts at one time but Ford clamped down on a lot of vendors in the last couple of years.

Ford won't make them and won't let anyone else do it either. Bet there is a Chinaman or Indian somewhere that wouldn't have a problem with doing it. You may have to buy 50 of them with Rupies though.
