transfer case adapter

i am putting my 1986 f250 together slowly. it has a 400 in it and i just bought a new c6 4x4 tranny for her. i went to line up my transfer adapter and it wont fit. i thought i pulled the right one at a bone yard awhile ago but i found out today it was wrong. can any one help me. i need to know what casting number i need to look for on the adapter. and also what truck would have the right adapter. i have a 1345 bg transfer case. and a budy told me that a adapter from a small block c6 would work is this true.
thank you for taking the time to help me. i hope to have her run on all 4 by this weekend. thanx again

maybe brain fade is setting in, but i don't recall a 400 engine option in an 86. the only 400 i'm aware of is the 335 series block made in the 70s, which uses bigblock 429-460 style transmissions.

so the engine is a 335 series 400 from an 81 in an 86 with what year transmission? a c6 that will fit a 335 block (unless its one of the rarer smallblock bolt pattern blocks) may have some different issues fitting a smallblock transfer.

I swapped a 400 in my 83 F250, they came stock til 82. I used a t18, and bw1345. The small block C6 adapter housing will work.....providing you have the correct length. C6 output shaft length might be why you have problems?

i got the 400 for a 81 and the c6 4x4 tranny for a 81 and put it in a 86 f250. i have no problem with the transmission. i order it right for the block. the adapter i got for the transfer case i believe i pulled it from an aod tranny or c4. im trying to find the right adapter going between the trasmission and transfer case.

i messared and order for a 10in shafter i believe that will still work

well, the 81 C6 should work ok, but the Aod adapter might be a different length, I have them both, I could measure if needed. On a side note, I used a 83 C6 in my 79 Bronco, and using the 79's np203 and adapter fit fine. So I would guess a C6 adapter is what you need. Any year should work(from the 80's to match the bw1345's shifter linkage) Did the Aod's adapter bolt up to the C6 ok?

no the aod is smaller in diameter bolting to the tranny. but a buddy of mine had to get another tranny for is 351w because the bell housing was all broke. so he had got another adapter with the small block c6. that adapter fit just fine. now i am waiting on the right tranny. i order a big block c6 4x4 with a 10 inch out put. after i got the right adapter i found out i needed the 7 inch. so now im waiting for the right tranny to come in. i was hoping to get a little mud on the tires this weekend. doesnt look like that will be happing, lol.

well, that 10" C6 could be a 2wd w/yoke removed, or maybe a 70's 4x4 version which some had a longer adapter. 7" sounds right. Hope it works for ya.

thanks, it sounds like you know what you are talking about, i got a good question. i been beatn my head on a board and been telling people they are wrong when they say a c6 2 wheel drive can be used for a 4x4. i tryed to put a transfer adapter on a 2 wheel drive c6 and it didnt fit, but that was the one i pulled from the bone yard off a aod tranny. so now when my new tranny comes in and i get the old one out im going to take the tail shaft off and see if the new adapter i got will work on a 2 wheel drive.
