Girlfriends 2001 (I think) with indash 6 disc cd palyer. When you start vehichle the radio says CD errror and goes to radio. When you hit the CD button it says same thing. As far as that goes anything you do that involve the CD player I get same message. Will not eject either. Does it for all 6 CD's. Any guesses?
Ford had a known problem with the CD transport mechanism in the CD 6 changers in the 01-02 models. This problem was aggravated by using non-"factory" burned CDs, especially ones with labels (even the owners manual warns against this). If you check E-bay (Search "Ford CD repair" and then use the Price: Highest first filter) you will find several sellers that will either sell you a replacement transport mechanism or offer a service where you ship yours in for repair. 99.9% certain this is your issue.
My '02 cd changer did the same thing. CD ERROR on all 6 slots. I removed it and took it apart and found that some of the plastic slots had come off the pegs due to a home made cd. i just alligned the slots back on the pegs and now the changer works fine. i figured it wouldnt hurt since it was broke to begin with. and now it dosent even have problems with burnt cds.
radio removal tools. you can buy a set from auto zone for less than 3 bucks or you can just make your own out of a wire hanger. though the wire hanger method doesnt always work well and it may scratch the face of your radio if not careful.
there are two small holes on each side of the radio. the store bought tools are just a U shaped wire that goes into both holes. put the tools in until you hear a click and then slightly put pressure to the left for the left one and right for the right one. then pull the unit out of the dash. unplug the antanna and the block of wires.

sorry i didnt make myself clear. it was the in-dash 6 disc changer
I have a single CD unit in my Escape and every now and then I get the same exact error.
What I do, and it works, is put the CD in and then hit the fast forward button, on mine it the #2 radio button. Error message goes away and it plays normally. I fnid this happens more when the temperature is very cold outside. I only use CD's burned on my computer and never had this problem until recently, I am sure the cold weather has something to do with it...and pushing the fast forward button unsticks whatever is sticking because I do hear a noise coming from the player when I get the error. Just a PITA, but not worth spending time or money on since I can get the CD player to work.
I am having the same problem. Tried what Tony said, to hit the 2 button (FF) but that did not work either. At the top of the display it says "disc" but when I hit eject it says either "no disc" or "eject error". This is not a burned CD but a store bought Iron Maiden CD that I have played in this same player for over a year. Maybe my CD player just doesn't like Maiden. Up The Irons!
It wouldn't hurt to put a CD lens cleaner in it once in a while since these players can be sensitive on reading all of the different disks that people make or buy.
Thanks for the tip. I'll get my wife's CD lens cleaner and put it in. I ended up pulling the stereo out, unplugging it and then plugging it back in. I let it sit for about a half hour and it finally ejected.
