VSS on an 87? If you mean the ABS sensor in the rear end, then I'm guessing it can be, but your ABS won't work. The speedometer and transmission depended on that sensor from 92 and later.
well I thought it also told the computer how much timing the the motor needed! its actually going in a 1972 f100 and since I have a 9inch rear I cant plug the vss to any thing, and I want he efI to still operate properly, Will it do so with out vss input
The VSS on 87-91 trucks is mounted to the tailshaft of the transmission/transfercase in-line with the speedometer cable. The computer expects the input and may cause the engine to stall when coming to a stop, but I don't think that it has anything to do with engine timing (could be wrong though). The rear end sensor is only for ABS in 87-91 trucks and if you unplug that one, only abs is lost.
and it is rear abs which is pointless with out front abs. i had mine unplugged for 3yrs never had a problem. the light will stay on but some tape or removing the bulb fixes that annoyance.
