cleaning vss

What can you use to clean the vss?

The VSS should be a Hall Effect sensor which is encapsulated. So to clean the outside, use anything short of metal reacting acids. WD40, Gas, Diesel, 401, windex, what ever you like.

However, if the Hall sensor is giving our false readings, while it is possible that outside effect are causing it (metal flakes or something), more than likely it means the sensor coil inside has experienced a dielectric decay. No amount of cleaning will fix it.
