My 98 Exp 5.4L 4x4 with 110k miles misses on hard acceleration. New plugs & air, pvc, and fuel filter were installed within the last 30k miles. No fault code is being displayed and when scanning while driving, no pending code is captured. Any suggestions?
sounds like a (COP) coil over plug problem . I had the same and also had no code. I found a bad COP with a torn boot. Also only use autolite single platinum tiped plugs. AP103 Other brands don't seem to work as well.
Is the scan tool you're using capable of reading Mode 6 data?
If it is you can usually see which cylinder is missing by looking at the misfire counts in Mode 6.
Dang, I didn't realize how enthusiastic you guys are. Buying your own code readers, and all. I've been using as many Ford parts as I can, and mine is done well at almost 130K miles.

I figured the money for the code reader is a worth while investment. I plan on keeping the expy well pass the point where I'm too feeble to drive. But, I have to drop another $60 to download the full scan program. With 112,000 on the beast, it probably wouldn't hurt just to replace all the cops. I've got a cross country road trip in a week and I don't want to take any chances. If I go the replace all cops route, I will definately buy them from the dealer.
For the price of a COP or 2 I'd take the truck to your dealer and have them run a cylinder power balance test on it. That can be done on the road while it's missing. Usually the cylinder(s) with the problem shows up easily.
I just can't see replacing all the COPs when only 1 has a problem.
Racerguy you're right. I would much rather know which cop is bad then have to replace all of them. But, I'm taking this baby cross country next week and would rather shall out the bucks to buy me peace of mind.
