01 Expy 5.4 V8 126k miles. just started missing when in gear at stop and then shaking - missing -sputtering even vibrating when accelerating and cruising. Check Engine (CE) light flashes AND stays on.... been doing this for about a week now. had the code checked at dealer, they said it showed bad thermostat!!!! they replaced that... not fixed....
every post related to sputtering, shaking or missing seems to indicate COP's, wires, boots, plugs, things like that...... but they all say that the computer shows which cylender is missing/bad..... while mine is showing wierd results... not indicating a misfire..
Any thoughts???? my buddy at the dealership seems to think I have a bad computer that may need to be reflashed or replaced. I had computer problems before, but that was 100k miles ago, and they went away when I located a leak in the windshield and fixed it... It seems to coincidental that my computer would go bad again???? ANY THOUGHTS this is a toughy!!!
I would definitely check COPS and plugs. If you're at 126k miles on original plugs, they are due for a change and that could be a cause for running rough.
I just went through the same problem, well, the same shaking sputtering missing sysmtoms. I also had the CEL flash and stay on solid. The ROOT cause of my problems was vacuum leaks, 1 at the back of the manifold and one on a line leading to it, I also had a vacuum elbow that was collapsing on itself when vacuum increased. These leaks causued the computer to adjust the engine to run very rich which loaded up the cats and O2 sensors. I get the solid CEL from the bad O2 sensors and the flashing CEL from #3 cyl misfire. Since that vacuum issues were fixed it runs and drives great (took about 200 miles driving for everything to clear out, it still sputter a little at first). I am driving it with the CEL on per Fords instructions, I need to drive hard for a week to clear it out before the O2 sensors can be replaced or the carboned up exhaust would just ruin the new ones. My misfire is gone but I'm still replacing the #3 COP and plug since I got the code twice, I'm am assuming its weak/wearing out. What are the codes you are getting?
The first time the light went on last week, it indicated a bad thermostat, they replaced that and the light went out, tuesday of this week the light came back on and has now pretty much flashed for the last two days or stayed on solid...... I havent had it back to the dealership yet...
Just a suggestion 1expedownr, but when you get the codes read next time, write down the specific codes (including any pending codes) and post them here.
fyi, the dealer told me not to drive the truck if the CEL flashes for more than a minute, he specifically told me to pull it over, shut it off and have it towed. When you say the CEL has been flashing for 2 days and then staying solid, was it just once and now its solid or are you still getting the flash? I dont know what kind of damage it will do but the dealer made it sound like the end of the world.

The ECM will flash the CEL when it detects a misfire that is significant enough to allow unburned fuel to pass into the cat. That can kill the cats. If you have to replace the cats in order to pass emissions inspection it'll feel like the end of the world!
My '99Expy did all of those mentioned, shaking, vibrating, sputtering, after each heavy rain, then all would go away when it's fully warmed up after drying out the one of the wet COPs by itself, I never bother to replace any. CEL stayed on more than once, 1st time caused by the cracks on the vacuum hoses, 2nd time caused by a bad temperature sensor on engine. I live in Houston where it rains over 120-inches a year. and mine Expy has 150K miles.
Thanks for the info pqd, they're having me drive it to clear the cats after a vacuum leak so that makes alot of sense (they made it sound much more ominous, I wish they would have just told me waht you did).
MisterCMK - I dont know the code that was tripped for the T Stat.... They just told me that it coded and replaced it... AND NOW FOR THE FIX..... DRUMROLL PLEASE.. in the end it is the COP(s) two were bad... they coded once the other code regarding the T State was fixed.... I guess now I can move on to fixing other issues with ol' betsy.... rear door lock, dome light intermitant when opening rear door etc. etc. Gotta say - this site is VERY helpfull in diagnosing and finding fixes to problems with these trucks!!! thanks again community!!
