I have a 2000 F350 with a 5.4 2v eng. with about 115,000 miles. this truck has been trouble free till a couple days ago. Parked it at night and it was running normal but next day it had a bad miss when accelerating. It runs smooth at idle and is smooth at any speed once you get to that speed and only give enough throttle to maintain that speed. If you gave any more throttle to increase speed or aganst a head wind or a slight upgrade, it misses bad. The check engine light is not coming on and no codes came up when checking. Shifting out of overdrive on the hiway helps a lot for accelerating and holding speed aganst a head wind but there is still a miss, just not near as bad.
Sounds to me like you need a coil....
Its only missing when you get it under a load which is common. Fords are bad about not setting a code for a missfire, sometimes it just takes a while for it to set a DTC. It will be hard to diagnose this problem with out a scan tool beins it doesnt miss at idle. Your PCM can set a DTC and not turn on the SES. I would keep checking it off and on until u have a code. Or you can take it to someone with an IDS so they can run a power balance test on it and hook u up. My guess would be a DG508 which is an ignition coil... I replaced one today on a 2003 5.4L at work, which is a Ford Dealership and total cost to the customer was like 200 bux. Hope this helps...
How many miles on the plugs? I've found 2V engines (4.6 and 5.4) susceptible to stumbling on acceleration when plugs and/or coils/wires are over 80k miles.
Ditto on the plugs/ I have 431K on my 98 f-150 I am on my second 4.6 engine and the most of the time either has missed it was plugs or the wires. I did solve the problem one time with di-electric grease in the wires. Mine took forever to throw the codes.
