Question OIL guard bypass

Hi All;
Just a note of thanks to all the great information you have given and helped with . Now, is a oil bypass filter worth spending the money on and if so which one is the best buy and best to use?
Thanks again

With the UOA's I have been getting on delo 400 and OEM filtering I dont see how it can improve them much but I will be putting a single filter bypass system on shortly (next change cycle) mainly just to see if they do improve any.

I thought it was. I'm running the OIL GUARD filter. I'm also going with extended changes to help pay for the extra expenses of the filter. If you don't extend the changes, I don't think it would be worth it. Time will tell.

To me, it just makes sense to provide finer filtration with a bypass system. It's just an extra measure of protection for these expensive engines. I have an oil guard, and am pleased with it.

I've learned recently that there is a limit to the filtration though. I heard the Amsoil kit filters so well, that it filters the actual additives right out of the oil, possibly being larger than 1-2 microns. Do you know what the Oilguard unit filters down to? I have a few thousand miles left (3) on this oil, and that will probably get me most of the way through the winter, by then i will get a bypass oil system. Isn't the full flow filter on the truck a 15 or 12 micron, or is it larger like 40? I know that the turbochargers, especially ball bearing, like (and need) superior clean oil.

From the Oil Guard website:

OilGuard full flow filters remove particles at the 20-micron size at an efficiency of 98.7% (absolute) and at the 10 micron size at 50% (nominal).

The OilGuard bypass filtration system will provide your engine with consistent ultra-fine bypass filtration down to the 1 micron level.

FYI... http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ is a good site that has en extensive amount of information on this subject.

I had purchased the Amsoil setup a couple of months ago, primarily because it was the only one I knew anything about (based on input from a previous co-worker). However, in my reading of all the threads on this and other forums, I became concerned about the potential for the Amsoil setup to "rob" too much oil from the main oil flow into the engine. Their site quotes a "10%" flow through the bypass unit. The net result was, for many, an unacceptable reduction in oil pressure at the point where it goes into the engine. On this point, I called the Amsoil tech service folks, and they verified that depending on how far the bypass unit was mounted from the engine, there could be as much as a 3-5 lb. drop in pressure entering the engine.

During this time, I had heard about the OilGuard system and researched it as well. I discovered that it is designed for a lower oil bypass flow of only 5%, and that there is typically only a "negligible" drop in oil pressure, again, how much depends on how far away the bypass unit gets mounted. They (oilguard) had also reported some independent lab testing results that were impressive.

There also seems to be a significant difference in the way teh Amsoil and OilGuard filters are designed, which is another topic that is addressed in great detail in one of the threads on the "Bob is the Oil Guy" site referenced above.

My long term plans right now is to test my existing oil in the engine now, test my new oil before installation, and test the new synthetic again after about 3-5K miles. Once this new sythetic runs its life, I want to repeat the same cycle with Rotella T, Delo 400, and perhaps one of the Redline oils. Long term... yes! Good information can come from it though, and I'll be sur eto keep everyone here updated as I go through my testing cycles.

I returned my unopened Amsoil unit for full refund, have now received my oilguard unit, and will beinstalling the bypass unit once my synthetic oil arrives.

Now that you mention it, keeping an apples-to-apples comparison going may not be completely possible. I've chosen to start out with 5w-40, but Redline is currently not marketing a 5W-40 syn oil (at least not that I can find, even on their own website). I know that Rotella T has it, but not sure about the Delo.

delo does have a 5W40 but you will be hard pressed to find it in our area. I've never seen it on a shelf

I am speaking with a decent amount of ignorance but what I get concerned about when I look at oil bypass kits is hose size. it seems that as you add any length to the path, you are going to really drop the amount of oil that the hose can handle. If you really want to talk about saving your engine, has anyone ever tried a pre-lube set up? Where I work, we put one on every marine engine we sell. really big stuff though.
