Factory DVD and Navigation system
The video issue, from my research, is a lost cause. As configured the oem dvd units have audio outputs, but no video output. The factory radio/nav gets the audio of course, but from everything I have seen does not have any video input. You would need a way to get a video signal out of the the dvd unit and into the nav unit. The signal out of the dvd is actually easy, but going into the factory nav unit looks to be impossible. The unit needs a video input and a way to switch to it.
I ran into all of this trying to equip my 06' F-350 crew cab diesel with nav/dvd. Ford didn't offer either from factory and initially I wanted to use all factory items since they are pretty easy to find cheap on ebay. While I am still going to use a factory overhead dvd unit I have opted to run a Pioneer Avic-D2 for ease in accomplishing both of the issues you are running into. The factory dvd was WAY cheaper than an aftermarket rear dvd player/monitor and the Avic can be had for less than a factory nav unit. Ford gets $1995 for the nav and around $995/$1500 for the dvd. I'll be setup for less than half that, have full on the fly nav control with dvd in the rear AND on the nav unit.
Unfortunately you have alreay paid a pretty penny for the nav unit when you bought the truck, so yanking it out and replacing it might not feel like the best thing to do! Wish I knew how you could overcome the issues without switching head units. If you have any good stereo shops in your area check and see what they have run into with late model Ford nav/dvd setups. Some of these guys are very clever at work arounds for factory stuff.
