223 6 gas mileage

Folks,
What sort of gas mileage can you get out of the 223 with a stick? Those old ford ads from the late 50's stress the economy of this engine.
Adios,
Brett

223 6 gas mileage

I have a flathead 6 cylinder that gets 11-12 miles per gallon. Not bad considering what some of the trucks and suv's get today. I had a 56 f-100 when I was in college 25 years ago and it got 5 miles per gallon. I remember filling it up 3 times on the way home from college (150 miles)...... good thing gas was cheaper back then.

223 6 gas mileage

hi brett!

i've ran a 223 with 3 speed & 3.50 gears since the early 80s and used to get upwards of mid 20s mpg. no problem but as the motor began its 3rd trip around the odometer it got sicker & sicker, the last couple of summers it only got 10mpg on a good day.......and 250 miles to a qt. of oil. i'm now in the process of goin v-8 with 4sp o/d tranny we'll see how that works out

mikie!

You were better off in 2001. Adjusting for inflation to year 2001, 1956's avg gas of 0.30 was an equivalent 1.96; the '76 price of 0.59 was 1.86. The avg price in '01 was 1.064

My engine is a 215 bored out to 223. I’ve made 7 extended road trips and get gas mileage in the mid teens. I think I should do better because the engine and carb are rebuilt, but I cruise in the low to mid 60’s mph and that’s running close to wide open if you are going uphill at all.
