I replaced the switch itself and the cylinder which it needed and still nothing the tuck started fine a few days ago then the cylinder just started spinning and it felt like the rod wasn't moving the switch so when I replaced the cylinder I thought it would justy fire right up.. wrong! Well do you have any advice Im not getting any power to the signal wire either so it's got to be electrical because the rod moves the switch and there shouldn't be anything in the cylindedr to keep it from sdtarting because that just turns the rod am I right or no? The truck is a 86 f150 gas
If you jumped from the battery positive to the start terminal on the solenoid and nothing happened you have:
a> a dead battery or,
b> bad connections on starter cable or,
c> bad ground connections or
d> a bad starter or
e> a bad solenoid
If you've ruled out a dead battery did the solenoid give a healthy "click" when you jumped power to it? If so, the solenoid is probably good.
Look closely at the battery cables. If you see a lump under the insulation it has probably corroded through. I've seen this before on a '92.
I'd inspect the cables, clean the connections on both ends of the battery ground and both ends of the battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter cables and try again.
No there isn't any electrical contacts inside the Key Ignition Switch, However the rod DOES connect to an electrical switch on TOP of the column. That is where the rod is connected from the gear off of the ignition switch. The switch should SPRING back when you go to start it, if it does not...its possible that the spring has broken on the electrical switch and will not let it move. There are no other ways to test the Electrical Ignition Switch. Remove and Replace. Make sure that it goes in the same way asyou took it out, and its exactly in the position that you removed it from. If you done all the above that the others has suggested...then this is your last problem unless you are not getting any 12 volts to the starter circuit.
