Thumbs down Ignition Actuator Broken

Have a 1997 F250 PSD.

Key no longer worked so pulled key cylinder, steering wheel, and upper and lower plastic shrouds. Found that actuator up towards key would move without moving actuator down by ignition switch. So pulled ignition switch. Been staring at it ever since.

Can anyone tell me how to replace the actuator rod?? It looks (just by lookin') that I have to take the whole steering column apart. This can't be right ... please someone tell me this can't be right ... (!!!)

Seriously, if anyone knows any tricks on how to get a new actuator rod installed I'd appreciate it.

thanks ...

uhhhhh, sorry, you have to tear it almost all the way down to get it in there. bright side is it will work after you spend a few hours fixing it!

1997 Ford F-150 ignition Actuator Rod

So does anyone have instructions on how to replace a broken Actuator Rod? I know the rod is broken because the upper part moves and the lower part connected to the switch does not move. In disparate news of help!

This is the 1999-2003 Superduty 7.3 Diesel forum.

You should be posting this in the 1997-2003 F150 Forum.

Someone there has probably dealt with this before.

Hopefully a Moderator will move this thread for you.

1999 f350 broken accuater problem

Just wanted to see if anyone can help. I've got a 1999 f350 7.3 liter diesel the other day I turn the key on ignition to to start my truck and nothing happened and then the key went completely I couldn't turn it on she couldn't turn it off won't do anything I went and got a new ignition lock cylinder I also got a ignition switch assembly and I've come to find out that it's neither one of those apparently it's the actuator in between the two that is bad but yet I can't find any information on it

Pull the steering column covers off best you can and show us some pics of what you replaced.

Also what is condition of the batteries?

The batteries are brand new. And I replaced the cylinder lock and the ignition switch the problem is in between the two there appears to be an actuator that slides up and down freely.

This is where the problem is.

You had the pin on the ignition switch inserted into the hole there right?

Hope you have a good back, working under there sucks.

I think this is the PN

yes I'm pretty sure that is it but I can't locate any removal/install directions for it, would it be easier to remove the steering column, how much time should it take, what tools? Things like that best would be a step by step guide.

I was looking for stuff like that and found squat, just like you. I would remove the column and work on it on the bench. Minimize the pretzel factor.

But before that maybe stick a screwdriver in the hole and work the mechanism to see if it's solid? Confirm that is the real problem. I've never heard of that breaking before but it is oolllld plastic.

Yeah I did actually just tried that and that's why I am confident its the issue cause even with the key out it slides freely.
what I don't understand is why they do such stupid things. I think it's just to make our lives that much more difficult.lol
