Plowing with Ex

The owner's manual states you should not plow due to the front air-bag sensor's being activated, I have noticed a couple truck's with plows on them, what has to be done to set up a plow? I have an '05 4x4 Limited.

I didn't see that in my manual, may have missed it. My X is a company truck and we had a plow installed last year when our old Dodge plow truck gave up the ghost. I did alot of plowing last year with this and had not one issue with it. It is an awesome truck to plow with.

My boss has even sat in the back watching a movie while I have plowed, just to observe mind you. ha ha

Did you have to change anything on the fronst suspension ? I have heard about using the F350 springs up front. I have the same Excursion as you ( down to the color ) and want to install a plow myself.

I changed nothing, just added an airbag kit to help with the weight, pics in my gallery. It seemed to nose dive and wave when hitting bumps with the plow on it.

I wouldn't use a F150 for snowplowing, but all of the Heavy Duty Ford trucks have basically the same warnings. I think it's just so you can't come back and claim Ford didn't warn you about certain things.

Here's some of the many various warnings from the F250 and F350 owner's manuals.

1) The air bag SRS is designed to activate when the vehicle sustains sufficient longitudinal deceleration. The fact that the air bags did not inflate in a collision does not mean that something is wrong with the system. Rather, it means the forces were not of the type sufficient to cause activation. Air bags are designed to inflate in frontal and near-frontal collisions, not rollover, side-impact, or rear-impacts.

2) Do not put anything on or over the air bag module. Placing objects on or over the air bag inflation area may cause those objects to be propelled by the air bag into your face and torso causing serious injury.
3) Do not attempt to service, repair, or modify the air bag supplemental restraint systems or its fuses. See your Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer.

4) The front passenger air bag is not designed to offer protection to an occupant in the center front seating position.

5) Modifying or adding equipment to the front end of the vehicle (including frame, bumper, front end body structure and tow hooks) may affect the performance of the air bag system, increasing the risk of injury. Do not modify the front end of the vehicle.

6) Additional equipment such as snowplow equipment may effect the performance of the air bag sensors increasing the risk of injury. Please refer to the Body Builders Layout Book for instructions about the appropriate installation of additional equipment.

7) Removing the blocker beam without installing snow plow attachment hardware may effect air bag deployment in a crash. Do not operate the truck unless either the blocker beam or snow plow attachment hardware is installed on the vehicle.

8) Note: Ford does not install snowplows. For low speed snow removal, Ford offers a Snowplow Package Option on select 4x4 vehicles. To assist Ford dealers and equipment installers further prepare the vehicle for snowplowing, Ford includes instructions in the Ford Truck Body Builders Layout Book and Ford Truck Source Book. These instructions are available through your Ford dealer; they include the list of vehicle models recommended for snowplowing and snowplow weight limits. Use of the Snowplow Package Option, or its equivalent, along with these instructions will help avoid possible powertrain and chassis damage from snowplowing.

Last year after I got my Ex, I looked heavily into getting a snowplow. Alas, I could not justify the expenditure. However, I did come real close to getting one. It was one from Snow-Way. I like their features a lot.

I reccomend that you check out a forum called plowsite.com. They are very active over there right now and all your answers can be had. There are several folks who have plows on their Excursions there.

I too was shopping around and liked the ones from sno-way:

http://www.snoway.com/snowplow-applications.cfm?id=89

They just seem smarter than the others I see around. But as with housedad, I couldn't justify the expense. I also noticed several references out there to front suspension mods (like airbags) to prepare the truck for snow plowing.
