On the older (04 & down) Super Duties the difference could have been as much as 2000 pounds. My 03 F-250 5.4L single cab came with front springs that were rated at 4000 pounds. I put a plow on mine, and it dove almost 3 inches when I lifted the plow. I installed a pair of the plow suspension springs (rated 6000 pounds), and no more diving. Of course, it rides harder when unloaded, but that's to be expected. I also installed a steering stabilizer, as that was part of the plow suspension package for that year also. The rear suspension should be the same, plow package or not.
On your 05, you have front coil springs, while the older ones had leaf springs. I don't know how they are rated. What you have to do, is find out what your front springs are rated at, and then find an 05 with the plow suspension, get the front spring code from that one and check to see what they are rated at. I don't know where you can get that info from---possibly the factory shop manual. I know that the manual for my truck deciphers the certification label, and the spring rates for all the available springs are in that chart. Maybe the 05 manual does the same thing.
Going to your Ford dealer's parts department won't do any good, as the only way they can order springs is by the code on your certification label--They have no weight ratings in their listings. I'm sure that someone on this forum has a factory manual for their 05 truck, and hopefully, that info is in there, just like it is for the earlier ones.
if your thread was after the first of September... I might have a better shot at answering you... seeing that I will be working for a company that installs truck bodies and snow plows for the big three auto dealers.... (mostly Ford Superduties) ... I would hit up a local dealer and scour the lots... they have to have a truck on the lot with the plow package ....its that time of year to start buying the plow trucks...
i found my answer i have 5600lb front springs and the plow prep springs are 6000lb so for 70.00 i am switching them to the 6000lb ones
=====================================
Are you sure that the newer "coil spring" Superduty truck plow package includes 6000 pound springs ??? I thought that on the coil springs, they were heavier. That's what the older leaf spring plow package springs were, but I think most of the newer trucks have 5200 or 5600 pound springs without any suspension upgrades. The only way to really tell, is to find a new truck with similar equipment, cab size, and the same engine as yours that has snowplow prep package printed right on the window sticker, and open the driver's door and get the spring code. In fact, check a few trucks--the springs are computer selected based on engine, cab type, and accessory weight. What might be considered a snowplow spring for one might be a standard spring for the other.
that is what i did and found out that the trucks with plow prep had 6000lb springs apposed to mine with 5600lb springs my front code is cc the plow prep trucks are dd
I have been waiting for a thread like this! No intention to hijack, but i think my questions are a logical extension to the original thread.
Will using the 6,000 lb springs reduce some of the rake in my F350 CC? If so, by how much? Is it a straight swap or are other mods required? eg. adjustable track bar, different/longer shocks. I would think that using Ford parts is a more palatable solution for those of us who don't want extensive mods to our F250/350s (warranty stuff etc).
Bonus question...what the heck does my truck have? Here are the details per door sticker:
GVWR: 11,400
front GAWR: 2,540 kg / 5,600 lb
rear GAWR: 3,175 kg / 7,000 lb
SPR: DDCC --> which refers to the front springs? the DD or the CC?
Many thanks to all who respond. This board is the *best* place for SD info!
Thanks...now to find out if there is a heavier spring available. After reading some of the levelling kit threads (and learning quite a bit about front-end geometry), i am not so enthralled with the idea of messing with the front-end. Stiffer factory springs seem so much simpler...
Please advise if you think this is a low buck way to reduce rake with added bonus of a stronger front end. Any other bits & pieces required or just a straight install. eg. tracking bar / longer shock etc Thanks...
As long as you use factory Ford springs, and the spring you are installing was available on your truck, with your combination of engine/trans/body style/accessories, you won't have to modify anything else. Ford only offers 1 track bar, and either standard or off road (FX4) shocks--no variation of either one. Everything will work properly.
