I have a 96 2wd with 4wheel abs. its been snowing latley and every time i hit the breaks and the Abs will work until i let off of the breaks. the light comes on and stays on. If i restart the truck the light goes off but will do the same thing when i stop next. i had a broken wire to the rear abs sensor all summer. i fixed it just before the snow came and i worked fine.
Any ideas? I havn't checked to see if the wire is bare or is shorting out.
Thanks for any help...
Unfortunatly, 4WABS requires a special scanner to pull ABS codes. So you can only do so much. But I agree, suspect the rear ABS speed sensor/circuit first.
If you haven't had, or an't have the ABS circuit scanned for trouble codes, other things may tattle on a corrupt rear ABS circuit signal.
Like a auto tranny, whos shifts are acting up, or a cruise control that won't set, or stay set & drops out unexpectedly, or a speed-o thats erratic, as they all also get inputs from the rear ABS speed sensor, so if it's signal is corrupt, or not present, those things should also be acting out!!!!
OK, well it doesn't sound like the rear ABS signal is corrupt, so I'd maybe look to something like, debris on the front wheels, or wheel speed sensors, thats messing with the signal they produce.
Rust, metal filings, mud, ect can corrupt their signal to the ABS computer.
Of course, if your stabbing the brakes on snow packed roads & locking the wheels, or have a wheel grabbing a little on a slick surface, they're just doing their job.
If you have tires of differing diameter, (I'm thinking maybe you've just installed snow tires), such that the wheels are turning at different rates, this can confuse the ABS computer & make it think the wheels are about to lock up, so it'll activate.
Would also be helpful to know which brake light you have on, the ABS warning light, or the brake system warning light????
If it's the brake system warning light, maybe the master cylinder fluid level float switch is sticking. It's a somewhat common problem.
If so, try removing the master cylinder reservoir cover & jiggeling/moving the float up & down & see if it'll go off.
its the abs warning light. tires are kelly chargers all the same size.
I'll take the front tires off and check and see if there is anything on the front sensors.
