Bought a 2002 6.8 4wd Excursion about 2 months ago. After changing the front hub bearings, the ABS light stayed on. The Moog bearings came with the ABS sensors, so I figured one of the sensors was bad (or I had damaged one of the wires. I knew I was going to change the brake pads and one of the calipers later, so I just drove it around with the ABS light and figured I would figure it out later.

This weekend I took the passenger side wheel and rotor off to do the brake caliper and noticed that the rotor had cut through the ABS wire. I bought a new ABS sensor at Autozone. Weird thing was the ABS sensor that came with the bearing had a allen bolt with only 5 sides. (Like it was not supposed to be replaced). I got it out with an easy out and the new one looked exactly the same (except it had a normal allen bolt).

After starting the truck, the ABS light stayed on until 20 mph then it went out. I thought I fixed it, but once I braked, as soon as I got back down to 20 mph the driver side front brake engaged really hard. (Enough to pull the steering wheel out of your hand if you weren't ready for it). After doing that a couple times, the ABS light came back on and the braking returned to normal (but no more ABS).

Any ideas?

Ok...so no one else does what I did and kills themselves like I almost did...

I talked to Moog tech service today. The representative said that their hub assemblies are NOT compatible with Ford ABS sensors and that their sensors are not replaceable. The new sensor that I put in there from AutoZone must be sending weird readings because the spacing is different.




When I took the new sensor out, I could see that the new one was just a couple mm shorter than the old one.



The shorter sensor wasn't telling the ABS system that the wheel was moving till I got to 20 MPH. When I exceeded 20 mph the ABS light would go out and the brakes worked normally until I got back down under 20 MPH. At that point, the ABS system would think the wheel had stopped spinning and it would try to stop the other one...quite aggressively.

Since Moog doesn't sell replacement sensors, I soldered the old one back together. ABS is working perfectly now and no damage done.

Just wanted to post this info in case someone else ever tries to replace the ABS sensor on the Moog Hub assembly.
