I'm a retired Maint.Machinist who is restoring a 66 F-100 4 wheel drive ( happens to be a short box) with a 300 cu in 6. I'm up on most aspects of the job. What I'm looking for is someone who has actually done this fitting a Ford box to a 66 and could supply me with some of the more detailed aspects of mounting it. Such as how to specifically prepare the mounting surface and will there be some fabrication needed to accomplish this. Some pictures would be nice. I know someone out there is very knowledgeable and willing to share.. Thanks
Well I can say that this subject has been gone over a million times. Long story short, any early to mid 70's truck with power steering will bolt on directly. The only issue will be finding the power steering pump brackets that fit your engine. You can even grab the power disc brakes off of it as well if you wanted to go that route. You can also swap the body of your 66 over to the newer frame with a little bed bolt hole modification. The cab and radiator mounts are in the same place.
Thanks Mark and John for the response. However, I have totally rebuilt (as new) the undercarriage as well as the truck itself. Just trying to save a little time as to the gear mounting. In my experience I have NEVER seen the 66 model 4 WHEEL DRIVE issue addressed. Yes, there are millions of sites dealing with 67 and after models. However the 66 is not a direct bolt up nor is it practical at this point to switch chassies. I do have the pump mounting bracket addressed.
Sorry about that, I was still on my engine rumbling through the neighborhood high. I should have slowed down to read it a little better. Are you going for a totally stock look?
No, not stock. We have welded and smoothed the seams and debaged it, 17" chrome wheels with 275:60 tires, and then we will do a nice interior finish yet to be worked out.
Why not make a wood template of the steering gear mount holes and use that to figure the diamentions of the frame standoffs/brackets? Just be sure to shape and contour it the same as the steering gear box.
The 66 F100 4x4 used a different cab and wheelbase than the 61-65 4x4's and even the 66 F250. That is why I was under the impression that they used the 67-72 frame.
I used a power box from a Toyota 4x4 on my 66 F-100 4x4. It mounted in the same place as the Ford box. 59flatbedford, the 66 F-100 used coil springs on the front, were as the 63 used leaf springs and the steering box on the 66 is up by the radiator and the 63 is back closer to the cab.
Mark Your recent post advising making a wooden pattern to aid in my p/s conversion was right on. In fact I had allready started to do it but got sidetracked. However, I am still in hopes that someone out there has actually installed a 70's Ford gear on a 1966 Ford F-100 FOUR WHEEL DRIVE and could provide me with a couple of photos to get me started. Its all about a picture being worth a 1,000 words. For all you other guys who responded, THANK YOU
