Can someone give me the baics (and "tricky" aspects, as well) for replacing the serpentine belt on my 2000 psd? While I'm at it I'm also going to replace the cam sensor, and the stock thermostat and housing with a 203 degree unit from Dieselsite. Thanks.

 

Just use a breaker bar on the tensioner, relieve tension on the belt and remove. If your radiator hose runs though the belt you will have to remove that. If so, it would be a good time to get a hose that runs behind the belt, only costs $12 or so. Very easy job. Good luck! Steve

 

Thanks hink10. I've read where some say the belt replacement is a pain and a special tool is needed on the tensioner, and others say it's a breeze. I did plan on replacing the run-through hose as well.

 

Take a look at the tensioner, there should be a square hole. The end of a 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar fits right in.

 

"Take a look" at the tensioner? I'm having trouble seeing anything down there. There is this huge cowling in the way. Do I need to move that? Or which item is the tensioner?

Whomever told you it was a pain and took a special tool had no idea what they were talking about.

A 1/2" ratchet and you're good to go.

Look around and see if you can spot the belt routing diagram under the hood too. It beats having to figure it out if you forget exactly how it ran.

Well, here's how my line of thinking went (uh oh... lol)

First, when I was composing my response, I only provided the routing for the 7.3L PSD. Then I figured since ZBeeble has a 6.0L, and he also posted in this thread, I better also include the routing diagram for the 6.0L PSD's.

THEN I figured someone with a 6.8L gasser would post up eventually (today, tomorrow, next month, next year after digging up an old thread, etc) and ask if I could provide the routing for their gasser.

So I used a shotgun to kill a fly. All in one post.

If a parts guy looks at you funny when you ask about an upper radiator hose that doesn't run through the belt, just tell him you need a hose for an engine with dual alternators!
