Hello, I'm looking for a diagram for the front diff of my van as I took it in for an oil change this morning and the shop showed me my front diff is loose(he moved the front shaft in/out and the dif was moving up/down.
My first post attempt did not make it, so this is mostly a repeat.
The front axle (differential) will move around a little as it is mounted to the crossmember through some rubber isolators. There are a couple of brackets that are bolted directly to the axle housing, which are then fastened to the studs that are embeded into the rubber isolators. There is a small bracket about 1" wide by about 3" long that connects to two of the isolated studs at the left rear, just above the pinion snout. On mine and another forum member's van, this bracket had cracked into two pieces. I welded mine back together a few months ago, and it's held so far.
If you start to remove the front axle, you will probably find either a broken bracket or a broken rubber isolator. It's not all that difficult to do; I did mine in about 2 hours the first time. That included loosening a nut that was frozen on one of those rubber embeded studs.
Thank you sir - the tech that changed my oil pointed it out to me. The drivers side bolt was loose(why i have no idea). I think it was this movement that was causeing a tick-tick-tick-tick sound coming from the front.

examine the cv joint boots closely for any open cracks or splits....any water leak and joint is toast....
jack one side up, turn and move wheel by hand looking and listening for looseness and noise
cv axles aka half shafts are easy to replace
site advertiser RockAuto has best price, get the new Cardones...comes complete with greas and boots all assembled ready to install...don't mess with rebuilts which are higher priced
mine are running quiet and smooth...$20 less each including shipping over local parts house...go figure
your '90 probably has U joint inner joint at differential end....double check before ordering...newer model year half shafts are cv joints at both ends
Thanks for the input guys - i'll check the CVs on my next day off(this sunday). I really don't want to let this rare van slip over something like this.
