I have a 99 F250 4wd powerstroke automatic no mods that I bought about 2 months ago.Lately and it seems to be worse in cold weather the OD off light flashes. The trans was replaced in july 06 (before I owned the truck)with a ford 3yr/36000 replacement trans. The trans seems to work and shift fine and the OD switch turns the OD on and off but I know the flshing means there is a malfunction.Just wondered if there was anything to check before I take it to the shop?
When mine was flashing, my odometer also was acting up.. Replace the VSS on top of the rear-end with a Napa P/N 530780, (they called it a ABS sensor), $10.47 and it fixed it. Been a year now, no problems..
Thanks for the tip I havnt noticed the odometer acting up. What was yours doing?
I should correct my description abit... It was my speedometer that was acting up.. It just stopped working sometimes.. Had to shut the engine off and restart it to correct flashing OD light along with the speedometer.. but the next day or so it would do it again.. I replaced the VSS on the rear end.. been good ever since..

That very thing was happening with my truck.......I replaced the VSS, and thought everything was OK, but it has started up again. This issue is now coupled with the ABS light on the dash going on and off several times until the truck warms up for a few seconds.
I don't know if I have and ABS issue, or shorts on the dash wiring, etc because my radio will go on and off at the same time ( I just leave it on) until the thing works it out....

You'll need to pull codes to see what is going on, but I would bet on the VSS not working right. There are two different ones, one for $10 and the other is about $25. I have heard of issues with the cheap ones in the past.
