tranny time

alright so I have an 88 4WD BII 5spd with close to 190,000 miles, I've had it for 5 years / 45,000 miles. I've taken good care of her but I'm not too knowledgeable... all the gears are sounding pretty grindy, except for 4th, which pops of gear out when I'm not giving it gas and recently has become pretty tricky to shift into without nasty grinding. so probably I need a new transmission - is there anything less major that could be wrong? Looking at replacing it, how do I tell if it's a Mazda or Mitsubishi trans in it now? and could a "transmission rebuild kit" (seen them on eBay) do the job or would it just mean more labor hours if i'm paying a mechanic to do it? thanks for your help

Lightbulb Trans Trouble Huh.....?

I've worked for a couple of tranny shops in the south central area of pennsylvania, and from what i seen the prognossis isnt good. Have you taken the drain plug out?, if so how much fluid ran out, not very much im taking. Your rebuild trans kits like you see on ebay is pretty much a waste. When dealing with a 5 speeder out of a ford there is no one rebuild kit. You open the trans a fix the problem, yeah you could "rebuild" it by like replacing all the bearings, but most of the time you just fix what the problem is. I would also check the clutch. They have an inspection area at the bottom or on the side of the bellhousing. After that i would you say your syncro's in the tranny are bad to excessive heat, (friction) due tot the lack of proper lubrication. Thats what i can see w/o seeing it myself. This may be some confussing mumbo jumbo to sort through, but its pretty self explantory. Hope that helps.
