Diesel Rangers - Anyone know about them?
I owned a 1986 long bed 2 wheel drive with a 2.3l turbo-diesel - mishibishi - best little truck ever made. It had the getup and go of a v6 of that time and got 40 mpg. I lost it in a wreck in MD, but it could be restored if one had the money and time and if the junk yard (Chip's)in Prince Fredrick MD hasn't crushed it. I think that turbo engine was an option in 86 and 87 and a non turbo Mazda was an option in 83, 84 and 85. I have only seen a few of each. I know that Pepsi had a fleet and one is in West Chester PA. A wreck with low miles is in a woods in Nottingham PA below Oxford. If I had money to ship mine home from south MD and had money to fix it up i'd do it over a new or other used truck. even with 210,000 miles. It still ran like new. - if anyone knows of one for sale e-mail me - larboardside(No Email Addresses In Posts!)

Ranger buyers were not given more than one diesel choice at any specific time. The early natually aspirated 2.2 liter diesels were built by Mazda. Later production years had the Mitsubishi 2.3 turbo diesel option. These are completely different engines. Clearly the 2.3 produced higher peak horsepower. Just as clearly, the 2.2 was designed to last as long as possible. I have one of the 2.2 diesel powered pickups with over a quarter million miles on it that gives 36 - 40 mpg in careful stop and go driving. The only "tuneups" it has received have been valve adjustments every 100,000 miles. Too bad the water pump, alternator, brakes, exhaust system, front suspension bushings and a few nickel and dime parts haven't been as durable, or it would have been maintenance free except for usual scheduled changes. These 2.2 liter diesels are the closest pickups to a "free lunch" I've ever seen.

The 2.0 liter diesel was never offered in the US Rangers. That diesel was offered in light automobiles. The two diesel engines offered in the US market Rangers were the 2.2 liter naturally aspirated engine which was replaced in following year by the 2.3 turbo.

Diesel Rangers - Anyone know about them?
The ranger 2.3 Turbo Diesel was available in the model years 1985,86, 87 only , prior to this {84& 83} the deisel was a 2.2 natural aspirated mazda engine,.
The 2.3 is a Mitsubishi , common in Europe & Australia. It is an OHC , indirect injected turbocharged diesel, cast iron block, aluminum head. A very reliable engine but prone to cyl head failure if overheated!!!
The same engine was used by DODGE in their Mini- Ram D-50 , truck , 1984-86.
I have owned three of these, & still drive one almost every day, it currently has 376000 on it , but required overhaul at 320000 , due to failed air cleaner hose , which allowed dust into the engine
I have overhauled a number of these , & parts are hard to find in North America , but they are plentiful in Australia!!
These engine have a number of trouble areas which need attention, but with proper maint. you should be able to expect 250-400000 before overhaul!
Wondeful little trucks with a great little engine!

Diesel Rangers - Anyone know about them?
My 98 Ranger 4.0L sounds like a diesel when it's idling. Does that count?
I wish they still made a diesel for the ranger. Seems like sales would be pretty good. It seems like I remember reading that Ford was going to be making a 6cyl diesel for light duty trucks? Could be wrong, but I think I read that somewhere, who knows.
Anyone know the performance specs of the older diesels?
