Transmission Options

Hi every body; most of my time spent here is in the 67- 72 forum, but I just bought an ’87 B2 off of eBay. I haven’t seen it yet so maybe my question will change when I do.<O</O

I was told that the transmission is gone (not with the Bronco). It was a Mitsubishi, the owner bought a used transmission (that will be with the Bronco), but it is a Mazda Transmission. They are under the impression that the Mazda Transmission will not work with the B2, and have told me that I need to buy a Mitsubishi 5 speed. In searching the forums it appears to me that the Mazda Transmission may work fine.<O</O

So should I be looking for a Mitsubishi 5 Speed, or will the Mazda 5 Speed work?<O</O

(1987 Bronco II, 4wd, 2.9L Engine)<O</O

Thanks

Chad

IM not a tranny guy but welcome to the B2 forums! IM sure you will enjoy the B2 once you get it going. There are some very smart people on here so just hang in there and you can get anything answered.

Well from what i understand the Mazda tranny is the favored transmission around here. But to be sure check out if the tranny is the right one, go the www.therangerstation.com and see if you can dig up any info on the transmission that came with your purchase. Perhaps you are lucky and got a better transmission.

Is it the M5OD or the T-K 5? Either way, I believe there are length differences that will need to be addressed, as I am unsure if your tranny crossmember will have to be relocated or what, not to mention the driveshafts may not work. That is probably why they told you that the transmission "won't work".

The other major consideration is which engine the Mazda came from. The M5OD has an integral (non-removable) bellhousing. If the particular M5OD included came from anything besides a cologne V6, the bellhousing bolt pattern won't be correct.
