I run mine in od until it starts downshifting alot or trans temp starts to climb or pyrometer starts to go to no mans land,we have a few passes to climb around here in any direction I can go to get to lower ground. also I take it out of od going down said passes when speed gets above about 70mph
When out of OD the engine runs at the higher RPM's is this causing any damage to the engine or just eating more fuel? Also how much does a typical temp gauge for the tranny cost? Probably need one if I am going to pull with the Overdrive on right.
The higher RPMs will not hurt the engine....in fact, it is better for it. Lugging the engine just creates exhaust heat and load due to the accelerator pedal being pushed farther into the carpet to maintain speed.
If I'm pulling a load, I will turn the OD off because I'll usually be pulling at 60-65 MPH tops.
Switch as you please on the go.....just be sure you're not doing 75 when you turn OD off.
I tow 8500# RV with my Ex. Large sail area. I leave it on OD all the time and it doesn't hunt. Also look at my EGT gauge to see what the engine is doing. Unless it hunts, I don't switch off OD. Asked BTS about it and they said the same thing.
