a 6.9 will fit, a 7.3 will fit and a factory 7.3 turbo diesel will fit. the power stroke wont without many changes and alterations in the electrical system. some guys have gone over to the cummins diesel with alterations.

mike manglos,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

I would suggest something between an 85.5 6.9 and a 94 7.3 engine

If your going to do a swap I would go with a 7.3 not a 6.9. I think that a stock 7.3 has alot more power. not enough to make it a hot rod, but just that little bit more to allow you to get the job done. my .02

Install the turbo off the original motor and the HP is no different.
A 6.9 is rebuildable without using sleeves.
A 7.3 is not rebuildable without using sleeves.

The HP difference is 10 HP on the stock fuel settings on the NA motors.

I'd go with the 6.9 - for longevity.

The 7.3s are prone to cavitation problems. The cylinder walls are so thin to start with that they are basically non-rebuildable as well. Sleeving also seems to be a problem with them. Right Dave?

The difference in power between the 6.9 and 7.3 is small and can be made up for in other ways. Want an engine that will last? Get the 6.9....

EDIT: Ya beat me to it by ONE minute Dave...
