I am not versed on Banks turbo's, the oil could be coming from the CDR if it is set up like an ATS unit.

So it's just throwing a lot of oil from the turbo to the intake? Pretty normal. The only way they will go off the deep end is if they stop spinning.

which side of the turbo is the oil coming from? And the filter on the turbo I am assuming (bad word) that you are talking about the waste gate actuator (small can looking deal) ? If the oil is coming out the exhaust side of the turbo, the seal is more than likely shot and will cause more problems before too long. If there is oil at the intake side, it is probably from the cdr valve picking up oil vapor from the crankcase and sending it to the intake for burning, much like pcv on gassers. with the engine OFF, remove the intake to the turbo and try to move the shaft up and down --- in and out. if you feel lots of movement, OR the shaft turns hard, the bearing is shot too. It will let you know when it takes a dump on ya. You wont be able to see behind your truck. Hopefully, you are lookig at oil vapor from the cdr valve which is serviceable or replaceable but will still pick up vapors.

I always cringe when we talk about wiggling the turbo shaft, checking for play. A new turbo will wiggle, as long as it doesn't scrape the sides, and turns freely, it's fine.

Not picking on you bilder.

Remove the intake box and air cleaner assembly. Make sure there is no loose rags or debris that could get sucked into the turbo. Start engine and see if oil is coming out of the turbo into the intake. If there is oil leaking from the turbo the internal seals are out and your turbo may need replaced, or at the very least a new cartridge. If no oil comes out of the turbo the oil is probably from the cdr as everyone else stated.

I take it is it a bad sign if the turbo is hard to turn? It has a tiny bit of shaft play as well...Should I be looking to replace the turbo bearings?

it should spin rather freely in the housing. thousandsths clearance is ok, if you take hold of it and move it to schoonovers ya got a problem or it is rubbing the housing. usually if the engine is shut down immediately after working hard, the oil cokes on the bearing and causes problems ... should let it idle down after a workout.
i do believe there are cartridges (compressor and turbine assembly) that can be installed instead of replacing the whole turbo assembly.

Well the turbo does spin, but it just seems to not spin as free as it should. Do I dare put it on and hope for the best?

If it is not installed, there may be no oil in the bearing.

Squirt some oil in the top fitting and blow on one of the fans with an air hose.
It should spin up rather quickly.

I oiled it a little bit and tried spinning it with an air hose. Still spins slow but I will spend more time working oil into it and get back to ya...
