Turbo Maintenance for Average Joe?

Is there any proactive maintenance that we PSD owners can do to our beloved turbo unit? We change the oil and filters but I've yet to come across a thread that talks about treating the turbos right.

Do these turbos needs periodic cleaning? How about O-rings replacement?

You can periodically check the compressor wheel for damage, tighten the turbo bolts, and there are o-rings under the turbo pedestal you can change if/when you take it out. I haven't read about much more than that.

Recently, my brother's turbo broke and scattered debris into the motor. His engine is now shot. I'm scared to death thinking about it.

Use good filters that seal well, I cannot stress this enough!

Which filter are you talking about? Air or fuel?

Superrangerman is absolutely correct!! To protect the turbo, make sure you have a good air filter that seals well and prevents dust from striking the turbo compressor blades. Considering the fact that the turbocharger compressor wheel can spin over 100,000 rpm, just imagine the sand-blasting that will occur if even a little dust gets through your filter...

Also consider using synthetic oil. It doesn't coke up on the turbo bearings like dino oil does. If it does manage to burn it just turns into a fine ash that easily rinses away next startup.

Nope. As you've seen so far in this thread, regular maintenance of the air and oil will keep it covered. Also, let the turbo cool before you shut it down to prevent the aforementioned oil coking. 300* is a nice safe shut down point if you have a pyrometer. If you don't, just be sure to let it idle for a minute or two before you shut the truck off.

Yes!!!! Definetly let it idle for a few minutes when you get home, even driving up the slightest grade to the top of my driveway the pyro will be at 500*, now add that to an immediate shutdown, with the lack of oil flow and you will get some seriouse coking. cooldown in im my mind the most important thing in turbo maintinence.

"Regular Maintenance" =
1. Use diesel specific motor oil like Rotella
2. Make sure coolant has diesel required additive
3. Keep air filter clean and sealed properly.
4. Change fuel/water separator regularly
5. Keep an eye on the serpentine belts (have a spare if possible)
6. Let the turbo cool down for 1-2 minutes before shutdown

.....?

As far as the coolant goes, on your next coolant change you could change over to Rotella Diesel Ready ELC and never have to worry about pesky SCA's or changing the coolant for the life of your truck.

ELC is only a $1 more per gallon than Zerex G-05 at your local Napa.

Other than that, you've pretty much got it.

Regarding Rotella Diesel Ready ELC, is it required to drain the entire system first? That is, can Rotella Diesel Ready ELC be mixed with the currely green coolant that is in the system presently?

Also, does Rotella Diesel Ready ELC come pre-mixed with 50/50 solution?

Shut Down Timer

Does anyone know of a timer that would run the truck for say 2 minutes and then shut it down? This would be great. Then you would not have to sit in the truck, 2 minutes seems an eternity when you finally get home. Dave
