'88 externally balanced
I recently bought a 460 long block on ebay. It arrived pretty much in great shape including the harmonic balancer shipped loose but no external balance weight. The PO says it did not have one. My believe that all '88 Fuel Injected motors were externally balanced. What do you think?

Yes it should have one. Double check the casting date on the side of the block by the starter.

Thanks, if I have to get a replacement are the hatchet all the same or did they vary year to year?

They're all the same. Just make sure some one didn't swap in a pre 78 bottom end/block.

The casting number is consistent with the external balancer. Could a pre '78 crank be installed in this block? If so how can I verify the crank vintage of the crank?

the early cranks will not fit in the late model blocks without clearencing, you can put the late model external balanced cranks in early blocks but not vice versa.

not a balancer just the hatchet spacer, the dampners are the same either internal or external it's just that spacer that goes behind it.
BTW I am pretty sure you can still buy them new from Ford.
