Internal or external Balance?

Need to know if my engine is an internal or externally balanced engine?

How do I find this out?

look above the starter for a casting number. If it's D9TE it's external balance, any other number is internal.

Also you can look behind the harmonic dampener. If you see a hatchet weight, external, if you only see a round spacer internal.

Ok, so it is an internal. I have a 351m bell housing. Np435. What do I need to do to mate them up? What clutch will work? Can I put all 351m parts on the back of it?

im assuming that your in the 7.5 -460 forum that thats what you have... the 351 bellhousing will fit..he motor plate (the one betwwen the motor and flywheel) will fit but needs to be trimmed around the crank... the flywheel and clutch i use is from a 75/76 390 (diagphram stlye)as there nuetral balance. be sure to get a roller crank pilot shaft bearing for a 460 though.. the bearing for the 390 fits but in the wrong place...learned that the hard way it cost me a bellhousing..the 351 starter should work solong as your not running a monster compresion big block..

Well I took all the measurements and the 390 bearing worked just fine. Still had about a quarter inch clearance.

when i did it the 390 bearing sat in the outer most bearing step in the crank... the pilot shaft slid in but when i tightened it down the clutch spline teeth hit the bearing when it snapped the bell housing... thats what i get for usingan impact gun...glad your having better luck

Once I got the engine at the right angle everything slid right in. We started by sliding the trans back but could never get it to seat. Finally we said screw it and pulled the front clip and motor. Only takes like twenty minutes if you have done it before. By tilting the front of the motor up it made everything slide together.
