does any one have the part # from internal balanced and external balanced flywheels
and how to tell th differance between 460 s
and the wAy they are balanced
Wade, did you get the e-mail I sent you about this? I never got a message that said my message wasn't properly sent, but it wouldn't be the first time that it failed to let me know that. Anyway, what you have to do is go to Ford and purchase a flywheel for an 84' (in your case) F-whaterver with a 460 and the tranney you have. Ford made a factory flywheel for that because the guys I talked to that had done that swap told me that's all they did. They did their's on an 86' F-350 going from a 6.9 Diesel to a 460. They told me that they didn't have to order anything special, just got that factory flywheel and it was all good. Hope that helps.
I have a resurfaced 460 flywheel out of a 84 truck, bought it to put my 79 F250, but went with the C6 that came with the engine instead, I'll look at it for part numbers. If you want it make me an offer. cow_rancher(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
In the early 80's Ford changed they're engine balance from 28 oz. to 50 oz..
The 460 is noticeable by the counter weight on the flywheel and harmonic balancer.
Also the 460 crankshaft will have a small counter weight cast on the front of the first counter weight close to the center.
In 82 or 83 Ford changed the 460 crank to a smaller diameter. This crank uses a counter weight(hatchet) that slips on the crank behind the harmonic balancer.....Dave.
Hey Tbirdguy, I have a '78 460 out of a Merc (it was bolted to a C6 of course) and I want to hook it up to a four speed transmission. What flywheel do I need? Can I just ask my Ford parts counter guy for a flywheel out of a '78 truck with a 460. Sorry for the silly question, but this internal/external balence thing really has my head spining.
Sorry about the delay, I haven't checked here in a while. I would say that all you need to do is go to Ford and tell them the year or the motor you have and the type of tranney you have. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be able to get you what you need.
