I have a 2004 6.0 Diesel 2500 Super Duty. When I am towing my fifth wheel, the truck will shift down on a hill and get me up there ok, but emits a fairly loud whine. Is this normal? From the Tranny?
If the sound is coming from the engine compartment, then it is the Fan clutch engaging and locking in to provide more air flow through the radiator. The fan is computer controlled and will engage and disengage based on several parameters the PCM monitors (oil temp, water temp, ambient temp, rpms, engine load etc).
The fan is noisy at speed when locked in, but is normal.
I just bought a toy hauler and the first time I climbed a hill and the fan kicked on it scared the heck outta me. I had read about it but forgot. I pulled over and even considered turning around, but the truck seemed to be running fine. When I got to our destination and told our group about the 2 other guys w 6.0's told me about the fan and man did i feel silly!
Make sure it isn't coming from the passenger seat. I hear a whine from there frequently!

Interesting enough when I tow my hauler up long steep grades at about 35 to 40 mph I will get a "whine" "howl" or something that is throttle depended. It doesn't have any affect that I can tell on power or heat, and only does it when I really get into it. Im gonna try and record the noise on my upcoming trip. It really sounds like airflow or something. ~Brad
