Toyota Rusty Frame !

This is a 1986 Toyota Pickup.
Anyone ever seen a frame rust this bad before ? I'd swear someone at the toyota factory filled the frame with rock salt before delivery. after seeing this I no longer hold toyota in such high esteem, notice one of the shock eyelets is broken right off. I'm buying a ranger !

That is not unusual in any brand of that age that has seen service in salt country. I lost a body mount in my 93 Ranger last summer from salt and I expect more to follow. The body is good but the frame is going the way of the ones in the picture.

That's a fairly common problem with a toyota of that age. My frame on my 84 was broke in half. We recut it and boxed it in with 1/2 plate steel. They will rust from the inside out and by the time you see it it's gone.

I saw one last summer, that broke in front of the bed. Looked like it was bending in the middle. Just "passed" NY State inspection too.....

"What", toyota isn't built by God and has a kink in it's armor. I wouldn't trade 1 ranger for 6 toyota's and as Forest Gupp would say, "and thats all I got to say about that", ha ha.

Never seen one that bad but have seen some bad toyota frames. Also when hunting for rusty frames checkout 76-90 jeep cj's and yj's. The later (up to 96) yj used the same frame but I haven't seen anyrust out yet. The old CJ's are notorious for it though. Went to a jeep show with some friends back in september and we looked around, and looked at the frames on all of them, lots had been patched, some survived, and others were ready to break. My brothers buddy just picked one up cheap with a bad frame. But we have a VERY good CJ-7 frame sitting out back from a FREE parts jeep. Frankentruck project there. Jeeps got the rust right at the rear of the frame right behind/at the rear shakle mount. The rode hard and put up wet syndrome.

I have had jeeps most of my life, alot of cj's and I've never had a frame do that. I have never had frame problems on fords or jeeps and I live in a salt state, but then I try to take care of my stuff, maybe that helps.

the old 63-90 Jeep Grand Wagoneers/Cherokee's and J Series Trucks have also been known to have rear frame rust problems if not taken care of.

Heck for that matter any make can have that problem if neglected. When I was a kid we had a neighbor that had a 69 or 70 Mercury Montery 4 dr and that cars frame broke on the right side due to rust car was probally 9-10 years old when it happened. I was in a junkyard not to long ago and stepped on the rear bumper of a 67 Galaxie and the entire bumper and rear frame rails fell to the ground, owner of the yard said he has seen that happen to a fair amount of late 60's early 70's full size GM's and Fords in the rear frame area thinks it was due to all the salt WV uses in the winter and the owners not washing off the underside often enough.

The main reason I got rid of my '91 F150 (in 2001) was frame rot. The mount for the right side radius arm bushing went away (I replaced that), the frame in the same area was riddled with holes, and two of the crossmembers had big holes in them. I had already replaced both fuel tanks, and I replaced the oil pan TWICE.

I had an 87 f-150 4x4 that was starting to get some holes in the frame, I bought it out of Pa, only kept it 2 months and sold it. This was only a couple of years ago, so the truck wasn't new or anything. It got me to wondering, so I would stop along the road and look at the frames on other older ford p/u's here in ohio, and they looked fine, the bodies were getting rusty, but the frames looked good. So I don't know what happened in that poor trucks life and whats strange, I bought the truck because it had such a nice body for the year, never gave the frame a thought, leson learned .

I had an 86 Trooper that was like that, a bit worse actually, since the frame broke. The body was ok, though.
Most of the time, people will wash off the body of the vehicle in the winter, but don't get on their hands and knees to properly clean the frame.

Yes, they lose their rear axles. Back in 1999 in Saugus MA one came off at 55 mph on a Cherokee (full sized), jumped the barrier fence, hit another car head on and killed the poor woman.

Not unusual rust damge in a salt state because it gets inside the frame and goes to the lowest point to pool in the frame. You see this kind of damage on fishermen trucks too.
