you're going to want front + rear gear ratios to match. If you swap both axles, and correct your speedo https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ND_BRONCO.html
You will be fine with the trans shift points. You might need to change the yoke on the back on of the driveshaft though.
No I understand that the ratios have to match. My question was though, isn't there some reason why the older axles dont work on on the newer truck? I thought there was some speedo, tranny thing goin on. Plus the exciter ring for the antilock wont work... Is all that true?
Yes it is. Sorry you got bad info above. The 9" doesn't have a VSS, so if you have an electronic automatic tranny it won't know when to shift. You also have an electronic speedometer, so it won't work at all.
All hope isn't lost. It's possible to fab something to get a VSS signal out of a 9". Here is one way to do it:
I have also tossed around the thought of fixing up the truck. The thing is the passanger side from the pics looks like it has a pretty sizeable dent from the rear wheel well to the front wheel well. I'm gana pick the truck up on saturday and will take a closer look then. hhhmmm so many options, I'm pretty stoked.
I don't know why, but the guy started to drop the tranny, so its just sittin on the cross member. Its an auto, with the 351. Now in that year was a 351C or W? I'll get the VIN and they door panel codes and decode it. I wish I could get more info out of this guy, but he is a spaz and doesn't know jack about ford, or most of the specifics on any brand actually.
Now, I am worried about that sun roof... Should I just weld steel back in and make it back to original? Thank guys.
Most 78's were the 351M/400. This motor was the same as a Cleveland with smaller heads(smaller ports) and more mildly tuned. Little food for thought a 460 will bolt up to that tranny(if it is a M) The valve cover is a dead give away, the M like the Cleveland has a wide valve cover and staggered valves. I had a 79 4x4 and built a 483 (out of a 460) for it,but thats a story in itself.
A question that is begging to be asked is this: Isnt the F100 have a the 5x4.5"(or is it 5") versus the F150 5x5.5" wheel bolt patterns, or is that only for the 4x2 F100 and the 4x4 F100 has the 5x5.5"?
Well I'm picking up the truck today and hopefully there is a dana 60 in the front. Wishful thinking maybe, but its looks really modified. I did find out that the tranny is fried, and I'm not too excited about the motor. I'll probably just stick with the SAS for my '92 F150 as planned. I just wish I could use that 9 inch rear on my truck, I even went to that link that andy gave me. The problem with the link is that it was for a front axle, and also I'm not sure it was English, sounded more engineer to me. Anyway, I'll get some pictures as soon as I get it home. Thanks for the help guys!

Reason: Bad grammar even for me.
Well I had hoped because I had never seen the truck before. But its a 44 from the looks of it. It does have a 9 inch rear that I will be selling, but it has coil spring perches though. I'll pull the engine and sell that as well. I might keep the T-case depending on what it is, but the none of the gears in the tranny don't work from what I understand.
