jeep wrangler fuel mileage?

what kind of mileage should one expect with a 1990 jeep wrangler with a 4.2L 258CID 6cyl 5spd.

thinking of buying a jeep but the old CJ's are hard to find or really nice around here, and the newer ones are sky high, and eventhough I think the YJs are ugly there is one with this description at an upcoming farm aution...

thanks.

don't buy a jeep if you are worried about fuel mileage. my cj7 with the same motor and basic carb set up got 15 on the highway and worse than that in town. I have heard the newer tj wranglers get around 20 highway, but have not experienced that for myself. My 92 xj cherokee gets 21 on the highway in overdrive, and a lot less around town.

I had a 99 with the 4 cyl. engine, auto trans. I always heard everyone complain about the mileage. I didn't think it was all that great, either. I did switch the front hubs to Milemarker manual hubs, and then took a trip to Detroit. I kept close track of the mileage, and was surprised that I got, on the average, 23 1/2 mpg.

My 01 2.5 wrangler got around 20, but my cj's were like around 16 to 17 in mixed driving. I love the looks of the yj and I'm looking for one to play around with for the right price. I've allways had a jeep around to mess with, I bought the wife a liberty, but it's not the same, she doesn't want it scratched. Jeeps have bad areodynamics, flat windsheild and all. The 258 is a good motor but poor mpg, great torque, in my jp magazine they say if you swap on a 4.0 head and mopar fi kit, it will impove the mpg of the 258 and give you around 50 more hp. I want a yj thats a 91 or down because I perfer the slanted roll bar. 91 was the first year for the fi 4.0 in the wrangler. I've had several 258's over the years and it wouldn't bother me to have another one. I guess the bottom line is that with the 258, your gonna be somewhere around 15 mpg, but for people that buy wranglers or cj's, mpg isn't the motovating factor. If you get it and don't like it, you can allways give it to me ha ha.

My 91 Wrangler 4.0 5 speed gets about 19.5mpg on the HWY drivin no faster than 65, In a more mixed drive it sees 17.25 mpg. Stock tires, no AC or power steering. If I were you I would hold out for a EFI 4.0 powered jeep. Carberators are for chumps

Just put a 4.0 head and fi on it, then you'll have a stroked 4.0, thays what everybody else is doing. That part of the lure of a jeep, working on it, or modifing it. the 258 makes great lowend torque, it's no dog, it just lacks hp. The 4.0 head and fi fixes that problem and helps the mpg, even alot of cj guy's are swapping heads and fi is better on inclines and what not when 4-wheeling. An old jeep is ment to be toyed with, or there isn't any point in getting one, and all Gods people said. "A MEN".

I drove a 2004 jeep liberty for a week when my van got wrecked. I swear it uses more gas than an EXCURSION...........too small to use gas like a large vehicle

I average around 20 with my 06 liberty, but no, it's not a sipper, It might be little, but it's also heavy for it's size.
