Just left work with my truck missing badly, really great in front on 3 co-workers 2 with Durajap oops Duramax's and one with a Cummins. Got home and plugged in my Superchips tuner to pull a code of P273 injector low circut #5. Is the injector bad or ? Also how do you replace the injector? Its worth the $150 not to take it to the dealer so I dont have toake off the chips, intake, exhaust, and burn all the red out of it
Pretty likely an injector. Make sure it's plugged in and that none of the wires are pulled out of the connector. Depending on the year, you might be able to swap #7 connector over to #5 injector and leave #5 connector unplugged, that way if it comes up with both 5&7 injector low codes then you know that #5 injector is bad. If it still only comes up with a #5 low code then you know #5 injector is good and you need to check the rest of the system. Also make sure that all of the connectors on the FICM (silver box over drivers side valve cover) are completely seated. Then run it and try moving the harness around and see if the skip goes away. Depending on the year of the truck again, there were issues with the engine harness having rubthroughs.
As far as injector replacement, you picked the fun side. Pull the CAC tube and be careful not to short it out on the alternator stud. Pull off the oil filler tube. Take off the glow plug controller and bracket and the transmission dipstick tube. Again, depending on the year you might have to pull off the ICP sensor. Next pull the valve cover. I find it easier to go through the wheel well to get those two bolts that are under the heater box. If you had to remove the ICP sensor, make sure you locate the gasket that sealed up the big hole in the valve cover or it'll be gone for good. Next pull off the high pressure oil rail. Depending on the year it's either one long round rail or a big celtic knot looking piece of cast held on with t27 or 8mm head screws. If it's an 03, continue on. If it's an 04, there's a stand pipe in the back 1/4 of the rail that might stick in the rail when you pull it, you might have to pull it out with a pair of pliers. If it's late 04 or newer, there is a 10mm allen pipe plug at the back of the rail that you should pull out now to get the standpipe out. Back to the rail, you might have a hard time getting to the first and second screws under the heater box, depending on how long your torx bit/ 8mm socket is - the shorter the better. Once you get all of the screws out, pry up on the rail to pull it out of the injectors and once you get it loose, turn it upside down or you'll have oil pouring over everything. I think each rail holds about ten gallons of oil...lol. Next get a 3/4" 12pt socket and put the open end over the injector connector and push down on it to release the clips while pulling on the injector wires. The connector should come out fairly easily, if not wiggle the socket around a bit or try pushing down on it with a pry bar. Finally you need a long t30 bit to unscrew the injector hold down bolt. As you unscrew it the injector will pull out. Just reverse all that to install the new injector and remember that when you go to start it up you'll have air in the system which will cause it to start hard and run rough until you have beaten on it sufficiently to bleed all of the air out. Hard acceleration is the key to good bleeding.
Have fun, Brian
P.S. This is what we flat rate warranty diesel techs call a generous 2.1 hrs pay.
Wow,that gives me somewhere to start, thanks a bunch, Guess I should have said its a early 04' ,also if you pay $300 bucks for a injector you should look at a little known web site called E-Bay lol or at least a wholesale parts supply. And just so I dont make a dumb mistake anyone know which one is #5?
Thanks looks like I got something to do this weekend, also not to mention the fuel! Whats the going rate for gettin caught with the dyed fuel I hear the dealers are required by law to turn you in
Ummmm...I didn't say this, but most dealers want to make the buck, especially right now and you can't do that if you're blowin' the whistle on your customers. I wouldn't run that crappy fuel if I were you anyways, unless you can be sure it's got a high cetane rating which it usually doesn't.
